IBM ThinkPad February 17, 2004 2.5 inch Hard Disk Drive Firmware Update Utility Release 7.1 ======================================================================== What This Package Does ---------------------- This utility will examine your system configuration and detect all the hard disk drives (HDD) installed. It will then check the firmware revision of the drive and judge whether your system requires a firmware update. If required, it will prompt you to run the appropriate firmware update program for your drive. This package provides firmware for the following HDDs: Model (Manufacturer) HTS5480xxM9AT00 (HGST) HTS726060M9AT00 (HGST) A non-diskette version does not support DOS and OS/2. This firmware package is supported on the following IBM ThinkPad systems: - ThinkPad T41, T41p - ThinkPad R50, R50p ** Note ** If you plan to use the non-diskette version of the update utility on a Double-Byte Character Set (DBCS) operating system, your IBM ThinkPad must have 512MB or more of memory (DRAM). Running the non-diskette firmware update on a system with less than 512MB of memory will generate an error message. To run the update with less than 512MB of memory, the system must be set to VGA mode: 1. Click Start, point to My Computer, right click and select Properties. 2. Select the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button. 3. Open the Display Device and right click at ATI MOBILITY RADEONxxxx. 4. Select Disable from menu. 5. The system will reboot. An ATI control panel related message may come up. 6. Run the firmware update utility in VGA mode. 7. After the firmware update completes, reboot the ThinkPad. 8. Repeat steps 1 - 3. 9. At step 4, select Enable and reboot. This firmware is language independent and can be used with any language system. The update utility only shows English text. Please consult with documentation accompanied with your ThinkPad system. If you encounter a problem attaching an FDD to your ThinkPad, please call your local Help Center. - A diskette contains several executable files other than FW.EXE. DO NOT RUN THESE PROGRAMS. Running these programs other than FW.EXE could ruin your HDD. 1. Close all open applications 2. Click the exact link to download the file from the Web page. 3. When prompted, select a drive and directory in which to save the downloaded file. 4. Run the file you downloaded to create the first bootable diskette. 5. Follow the instructions on the screen to create the diskette. 6. When the diskette has been created, place the diskette in the ThinkPad system that has the HDD to be updated. 7. Boot the system from the diskette. The firmware update utility will show all of the HDDs that are detected. They will be listed in the upper area of the Main Menu. -A blinking mark to the left of the drive listed indicates that an update is required. -No blinking mark to the left of the drive listed indicates that the HDD has latest firmware and there is no need to update, or the firmware update is not for your drive. In this release, there is no firmware data other than supported models. If the message notifies diskette name to insert, please quit the program. 8. Follow the instructions on the screen to update the firmware. <> Do not power off the ThinkPad system during the firmware update process, or your HDD may not be usable anymore. 9. When the installation is complete, remove the firmware update diskette from floppy disk drive and power off your ThinkPad system. NOTE: Do not restart the ThinkPad system using the ctrl-alt-del keys. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Non-diskette Update Program Release ------------------------------------- NOTES: - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program. - If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - Before using this Update Utility with Windows 98 Second Edition, IBM recommends applying the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from the Microsoft Web site Knowledge Base Article ID Q239887. 1. Print these instructions or display on another computer. 2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 3. Start a supported version of Windows on the target computer. 4. Make the temporary directory on the hard disk drive (for instance, C:\Temp) 5. Download the Hard Disk Drive Firmware Update Utility from the web site and store the file into the temporary directory. 6. Save all of your work, and close all open programs. (Once executed, this package will automatically shutdown Windows. All unsaved work will be lost.) 7. Click the Start button, then click Run. 8. In the Open dialogue box, specify the utility filename with the full path name where you stored the Update Utility. Then press the Enter key. 9. The package will extract the files necessary to perform the update, and restart into the firmware update environment. Follow the directions on the screen to update your firmware. Warning: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, Your HDD may not be usable anymore. To continue the installation, follow the Diskette Release instructions above and start with the middle of step 7.
