Rockwell modem device driver version 2.1.2.161.009 README This update package installs the Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 98 device driver for the Rockwell modem that comes preinstalled in your IBM(R) Aptiva(R) computer. This is a V.90 device driver, which enables faster connection speeds over normal phone lines than the 33.6 kilobits-per-second (Kbps) speed that can be achieved with the industry-standard V.34 device drivers. This update package is intended for IBM Aptiva machine types 2156-xx, 2158-xx, 2163-xx, 2164-xx, 2165-xx, 2170-xx, 2171-xx, 2172-xx, 2174-xx, and 2190-xx. Your Aptiva computer, depending on the model, might have come with a device driver for the 56K modem; this is an upgrade to that device driver. This update resolves the following issues: 1. Added a fix for Japanese Ringback. 2. Changed the Dialtone Stability time in the Tones section. 3. Fixed busy and congestion cadence values. 4. Improve two-line ATI3. 5. Implement support of overcurrent protection on input 4 for the HomeLan combo board. 6. Reenable handset detection while in data/audio and Media Ring active state. 7. Allow switching between handset and Mic/Speaker while audio is active in Media Ring active state. 8. Improved low power support. 9. Fix for receive key abort for Winfax. Now issue DLE/ETX (empty frame)in this case. This is needed by Winfax during error recovery. 10.Put in upper limit check into call waiting detection algorithm to avoid false detects. Print this file so that you can refer to it during the installation. Also, be sure to read the "Limitations" section in this file. INSTALLING THE UPDATE --------------------- 1. If the update was successful, the file version is appears as 2.1.2.161.009. LIMITATIONS ----------- Although this device driver enables your modem for 56-Kbps connections, you might frequently obtain connections slower than 56 Kbps, for any of the following reasons: o The maximum connection speed that is possible is approximately 53 Kbps, because of United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) limits on telephone-company power. o The service to which you are connected must support the V.90 or K56flex standard to obtain a high-speed connection. Most of the common online services, such as AOL and CompuServe, support V.90, K56flex, or both. o Excessive electronic interference (noise) on your phone line can reduce your connection speed. o If your telephone company uses more than one analog-to-digital conversion, your connection speed will not exceed 33.6 Kbps. o The V.90 and K56flex standards are available only through service providers with a direct digital link to the telephone company. For example, if you connect your modem to the modem on another computer to play a game, 33.6 Kbps is the maximum connection speed you can obtain. o The high-speed digital data connections enabled by V.90 and K56flex are only for data that your modem is receiving. Data that is transmitted from your modem is limited to a speed of 33.6 Kbps. TRADEMARKS ---------- IBM and Aptiva are trademarks of the IBM Corporation in the United States, other countries, or both.
