-------------------------------------------------------------------- Display Drivers for Windows 95/98 for the S3/Diamond Stealth III S500 series ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This README file contains procedures for installing the S3/Diamond Stealth III S500 series display driver for Windows 98 and Windows 95; It also contains other display related procedures. Unless otherwise noted "Windows" refers to Windows 98 and Windows 95. For best results, install the display driver supplied with this README file. IMPORTANT NOTE: Because the Savage4 is an AGP device, OEM Service Release 2.1 or later for Windows 95 must be installed on your system for the device drivers to work properly. --------------------------- Plug and Play installation: --------------------------- After installing the S500 series board, Windows 95/98 should detect the S500 series as a new display device, and will prompt for the display driver location. When prompted for the location of the display driver files, browse to the Win9x directory on the S500 series CDROM, or your local/network directory that contains the driver files corresponding to your operating system. If prompted, select the Stl500m.inf file and continue through the driver installation status screens. ------------------------------------------- Manually installing the S500 series display driver: ------------------------------------------- 1. Start Windows in VGA mode. If you need to switch to VGA mode, use the following instructions; otherwise, continue with step 2. +--- To switch to VGA mode (Win 95)-----------------------------+ ³ ³ ³ a. Click the right mouse button when the pointer is on ³ ³ any blank area of the Desktop. ³ ³ b. Select PROPERTIES from the pop-up menu. ³ ³ c. Click on the SETTINGS tab. ³ ³ d. Click on the CHANGE DISPLAY TYPE button. ³ ³ e. Under Adapter Type, click on the CHANGE button. ³ ³ f. Click on the SHOW ALL DEVICES button. ³ ³ g. On the Manufacturers list, select STANDARD DISPLAY ³ ³ TYPES. ³ ³ h. On the Models list, select STANDARD DISPLAY ADAPTER ³ ³ (VGA). ³ ³ i. Click on the OK button; then click on the following ³ ³ buttons as windows reappear: CLOSE, APPLY, and then ³ ³ YES to restart the computer. ³ +---------------------------------------------------------------+ +--- To switch to VGA mode (Win 98)-----------------------------+ ³ ³ ³ a. Click on the ADVANCED button. ³ ³ e. Under ADAPTER, click on the CHANGE button. ³ ³ f. On the "Update Device Driver Wizard" page click on ³ ³ NEXT, then select "DISPLAY A LIST OF ALL DRIVERS..." ³ ³ and click on NEXT. ³ ³ g. On the "Update Device Driver Wizard" page, select ³ ³ SHOW ALL HARDWARE. ³ ³ h. On the Manufacturers list, select STANDARD DISPLAY ³ ³ TYPES. ³ ³ i. On the Models list, select STANDARD PCI GRAPHICS ³ ³ ADAPTER (VGA). ³ ³ j. Click on the NEXT button; then click on the following ³ ³ buttons as various windows appear: NEXT, FINISH, ³ ³ CLOSE, CLOSE and then YES to restart the computer. ³ +---------------------------------------------------------------+ 2. Click on the START button, select SETTINGS, and then click on CONTROL PANEL. 3. Double-click on the DISPLAY icon. The Display Properties window appears. Note: You can also display the Display Properties window by clicking the right mouse button anywhere on the Desktop and then selecting the PROPERTIES option from the pop-up menu. 4. Click on the SETTINGS tab. 5. Click on the ADVANCED PROPERTIES or CHANGE DISPLAY TYPE button depending on your version of Windows. 6. Under Adapter Type, click on the CHANGE button. 7. In the Select Device window, click on the HAVE DISK button. 8. Change the path statement to point to the driver files, then click on the OK button. The driver files can be installed from a local, CD-ROM, or network directory. 9. Select S500 series driver from the list, and click on OK. If a message appears stating that one or more driver files are older than the files on the system, click on YES. 10. Click on the CLOSE button. 11. Select the appropriate resolution using the Desktop Area and Color Palette options. 12. Click on the APPLY button. A System Settings Change box appears. 13. Click on YES to restart your PC. Installation of the new S500 series display driver is now complete. ----------------------------------- 1.1 Unattended driver installation ----------------------------------- To install the S500 series display driver without user intervention: 1. Copy all the files from the driver distribution to a working directory on your hard disk or network. 2. Edit the S3INST.DAT file to contain the appropriate values for the DriverPath, XRES, YRES, BPP, and other installation parameters. 3. Run S3INST.EXE Note: The auto-installer cannot detect hardware. The user is responsible for providing valid data in the S3INST.DAT file. ---------------------------------- 2.0 Changing the Display Settings ---------------------------------- To change the display settings: 1. Start Windows. 2. Click on the START button, select SETTINGS, and then click on CONTROL PANEL. 3. Double-click on the DISPLAY icon. The Display Properties window appears. 4. Click on the SETTINGS tab. 5. Change the resolution, color palette, or font size. NOTE: If your selection is limited to 640x480, refer to section 2.1 below. 6. Click on the APPLY button. The Systems Settings Change box appears. 7. As prompted, restart Windows or press OK and then Yes to resize the display dynamically. ----------------------------------------- 2.1 Resolving 640x480 Resolution Capping ----------------------------------------- If your display resolution is limited to 640x480, you may not have the proper monitor type selected. To change the monitor type: 1. Click on the START button, select SETTINGS, and then click on CONTROL PANEL. 2. Double-click on the DISPLAY icon. The Display Properties window appears. 3. Click on the SETTINGS tab. 4. Choose Advanced Properties. 5. Click on the Monitor tab. 6. Change the Monitor type selection to match your monitor. If your exact monitor model is not listed, either choose a comparable model recommended by the monitor manufacturer, or one of the Standard Monitor Types which matches your monitor's maximum resolution. WARNING: Be sure that you do not select an incorrect monitor type which exceeds your monitor's capabilities. Attempting to use display frequencies that are not supported may damage your monitor. -------------------------------------- 3.0 Changing the Monitor Refresh Rate -------------------------------------- To change the monitor refresh rate: 1. Start Windows. 2. Click the right mouse button on the Desktop; then select PROPERTIES from the pop-up menu. 3. In the Display Properties window, click on the SETTINGS tab. 4. Click on the ADVANCED... button. 5. Select the ADAPTER tab. 5. Select the desired refresh rates from the REFRESH RATE pull-down menu. Note: For DDC monitor detection, select OPTIMAL as the refresh rate for the supported resolution. 6. Click on APPLY to test the changes, YES to keep the selected refresh rate, and then OK to exit the Display Properties window. -------------------- 4.0 Troubleshooting -------------------- Problem: DirectX games or applications are not working properly.
