It is recommended that the kit software is installed on systems with at least 32MB of system memory. 5. It is recommended that there is sufficient hard disk space in the directory (typically C:\WINDOWS\TEMP) on the system to install this software. Please check with your system provider to determine which operating system and Intel« chipset are used in your system. ************************************************************ * 4. INSTALLING THE MAIN DISTRIBUTION PACKAGE ************************************************************ 1. Check the System Requirements. Windows 95 or Windows 98 must be fully installed and running on the system prior to running this software. 2. Close any running applications. You may experience some difficulties if you don't do this. 3. Un-zip the InstallShield* installation program files into a temporary directory. 4. Run the InstallShield installation program, SETUP.EXE. 5. You will be prompted to agree to the license agreement. If you do not agree, the Installer will exit prior to extracting any files. 6. Select the operating system you want to install the INF files to. 7. The INF files will be copied to the target directory C:\Program Files\Intel\IntelINF by default. They are not designed to work with end-user ("RETAIL") versions of the operating systems. The Windows 98 (or Windows 98 Second Edition) OEM Preload Kit distribution CD contains a setup directory with all the base OS setup files (*.CAB) and installation program (SETUP.EXE). The name of the directory may vary depending on the distribution CD. (i.e. \WIN98\) NOTE: The files for Windows 98 are designed to work solely with Windows 98. The files for Windows 98 Second Edition are designed to work solely with Windows 98 Second Edition . 1. Copy the OS installation files from the Windows 98 setup directory to a directory on the hard disk. This procedure requires a large amount of disk storage. It is important to make sure this is enough disk space before beginning the copy process. This directory shall be referred to as the . 2. Copy the INF files from the appropropiate directory, according to the version of operating system used. FOR Windows 98: copy \Win98 to the setup directory identified in Step 1 above. FOR Windows 98 Second Edition: copy \Win98SE to the setup directory identified in Step 1 above. 3. Depending on your content: Case A: CUSTOM.INF file IS NOT present in the In this case, rename INFPRELO.INF to CUSTOM.INF. Case B: CUSTOM.INF file IS present in the In this case, incorporate the content of INFPRELO.INF into the existing CUSTOM.INF file. Verify that the following entry is present: Intel(r) 82802 Firmware Hub Device -OR- Intel(r) Security Driver ************************************************************ * 7. IDENTIFYING THE SOFTWARE VERSION NUMBER ************************************************************ The software version of this application is listed in the RELNOTES.TXT file included with the software package. ************************************************************ * 8. TROUBLESHOOTING ************************************************************ It is assumed that the system requirements from Section 2 above have been satisfied. Issue: Distribution package program software fails to install. Solution: The distribution package contains the InstallShield installation program, SETUP.EXE which is a Windows executable. It assumes that there is sufficient disk space to execute the program in the a temporary directory selected by the user. If this problem occurs, free up some disk space in the temporary directory area and re-install the software following the procedures in Section 4. Issue: System locks up during Device Manager Remove or during restart. Solution: System lockup can occur during Restart as a result of several possible system issues. In the event of system lockup, restart the machine and view Device Manager. If devices are listed properly and system experiences no further problems, then the .INF file restore process was successful. If devices are not configured correctly try re-running the procedures outlined in Section 5. If this does not fix problems or further problems are experienced, re-install the operating system. Issue: When updating the USB device for Windows 95 operating systems with USB Supplement, the system halts with a blue screen during USB update, or the USB device description in Device Manager has a yellow exclamation mark next to it. Solution: Ensure that the all steps were followed in Section 5B, "Installing the Windows 95 INF Files Prior to OS Installation." To address this problem, re-install the operating system following the directions in Section 5B. Issue: Intel« Security Driver fails to install. Solution: The IFWH.INF file reference the Intel« 82802 Firmware Hub Controller device, which are also controlled by the Intel« Security Driver. The operating system can only reference one of these driver sets. To address this problem on systems where the Intel« Security Driver is going to be installed, 1. remove the IFWH.INF file reference in the CUSTOM.INF file. 2. remove the IFWH.INF file from the identified in Section 5, Installing the INF Files Prior to OS Installation. 3. re-install the operating system following the directions in Section 5. ************************************************************ ************************************************************ * DISCLAIMER ************************************************************ Intel is making no claims of usability, efficacy or warranty.
