Obtain the additional package, Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 (or higher), and update the Embedded Controller Program in the system with it. - If you need to update Embedded Controller Program as well as the BIOS, update the BIOS first. - This program is language independent and can be used with any language system. What This Package Does ---------------------- This ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility updates the BIOS (system program) stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. This release supports the following system: - ThinkPad R50e The supported operating systems are as follows: - Windows 2000 - Windows XP (Home Edition and Professional) To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Summary of Changes section. To update the BIOS, refer to the Updating BIOS section. This is to enable/disable for the computer to prompt for the Power-on password when the system starts from hibernate. Go to the Require password after hibernate option under Security and Password in IBM BIOS Setup Utility, and refer to Item Specific Help for details. - (New) Support for a new option, "Timer Wake with Battery Operation" in IBM BIOS Setup Utility. This is to enable/disable scheduled wake up events if the computer is not connected to the AC adapter. Go to the Timer Wake with Battery Operation option under Config and Power in the IBM BIOS Setup Utility, and refer to Item Specific Help for details. - (Fix) System may hang when 3D screen saver is running for a long time. - (Fix) The remaining battery hour may become very short if the AC adapter is removed from the computer in hibernation mode. Updating BIOS ------------- Notes: - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS. - If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment. 1. Print these instructions or display on another computer. 2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 3. Start Windows 2000/XP and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer. 4. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive. 5. Click the Start button, then click Run. 6. Specify the file name with the full path name where you extracted the package. (e.g. C:\Temp\xxxxxxxx.EXE) Then click OK. Hint: For unattended update, specify the file name with options "-s -a -s". (e.g. C:\Temp\xxxxxxxx.EXE -s -a -s) The BIOS is updated without any user interaction. 7. Follow the instructions on the screen. Depending on the operating system configuration, restarting the operating system and rerunning this BIOS update utility may be required. In this case, the following message will appear. "DeviceIoControl() returns 2 Please restart your operating system and execute the BIOS or Embedded Controller update utility again." Windows will shut down automatically and ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility screen appears. 8. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. 9. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 10. Select Update system program and follow the instruction on the screen. Warning: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off. Initializing BIOS ----------------- In some cases, it may be a good idea to try BIOS initialization when you have some troubles. To initialize the BIOS settings; 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Press F9 key to load default configuration. 5. Select Yes. 6. Press F10 key to save default configuration and exit. 7. Select Yes. After the initialization has been completed, the system restarts automatically. BIOS Information ---------------- Each version of the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility contains the following BIOS. Also the supported versions of Embedded Controller Program are shown bellow. The versions of BIOS and Embedded Controller Program can be viewed by entering IBM BIOS Setup Utility. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version. 5. Turn off the computer. Memory Map Information ---------------------- Reserved Area: The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by BIOS and others. C0000-CCFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS CD000-CEFFF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet DC000-DFFFF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*1) E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS (Note) *1: This area becomes free by disabling the USB BIOS Support option under Config and USB in IBM BIOS Setup Utility. Even if disabled, the USB devices work under the Windows environment. Usable Area: The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386. CF000-DBFFF But certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems. The addresses vary and depend on the design of each Operating System.
