What This Diskette Does ----------------------- This System Program Service Diskette updates the system program (BIOS) stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. This release supports the following system: - ThinkPad G41 To determine if you should update the system program, refer to the Summary of Changes section. To update the system program, refer to the Installation instructions section. (New) New Function or Enhancement (Fix) Correction to existing function <1.03 - 1.03 (1XET44WW)> - (New) Support for ThinkPad G41. <1.04 - 1.04 (1XET45WW)> - (Fix) Wrong CPU speed may be displayed in BIOS Setup on the machine with a CPU. - (Fix) After display mode was set by GUI on Desktop, display mode may be changed when LID is re-opened. <1.06 - 1.06 (1XET47WW)> - (Fix) Some systems power on automatically after AC/Battery plug in from no power state. - (Fix) "unknown" may be returned for Processor family of SMBIOS type4. <1.08 - 1.08 (1XET49WW)> - (New) MPU microcode update. - (Fix) Some BIOS Setup menu items are not copied, using a Remote CMOS Update Utility. - (Fix) System may not boot with "OS Not Found" message very intermittently when Hard Drive Password is set. <1.09 - 1.09 (1XET50WW)> - (New) Enhancement of security function on power-on: When hard drive password is set, regardless of other passwords settings, Wake On Lan from power off state does not work. - (Fix) Update based on Intel 852GME HPLLCC errata Updating System Program (BIOS) ------------------------------ Notes: - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the system program (BIOS) in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program (BIOS). - Make sure the System Program Service Diskette is write-protected. 1. Print these instructions or display on another computer. 2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 3. Start Microsoft Windows 2000/XP and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer. 4. Make the temporary directory on the hard drive (for instance, C:\Temp) 5. Download the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility from the web site and store the file into the temporary directory. 6. Click Start and then click Run. 7. In the Open dialog box, specify the utility filename with the full path name where you stored ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility. (For example: C:\Temp\1xuj07ud.exe) Then click OK. This will create the diskette. 8. Insert the write protected System Program Service Diskette into the diskette drive and turn on the computer. 9. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. 10. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 11. Select Update system program and follow the instructions on the screen. Note: If you are updating the system program through the USB external diskette drive, it will take quite a long time to complete reading the system program file, but it is normal. Continue the update. Attention: Do not turn off, suspend the computer or remove the diskette until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off. Initializing System Program (BIOS) ---------------------------------- In some cases, it may be a good idea to try BIOS initialization when you have some troubles. To initialize the BIOS settings: 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Make sure there is no diskette in the diskette drive. 3. Turn on the computer. 4. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 5. Press F9 key to load default configuration. 6. Select Yes. 7. Press F10 key to save default configuration and exit. 8. Select Yes. After the initialization has been completed, the system restarts automatically. BIOS Information ---------------- Each version of the System Program Service Diskette contains the following system program (BIOS). The versions of BIOS can be viewed by envoking the BIOS Setup Utility. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. Memory Map Information ---------------------- Reserved Area: The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by the system program (BIOS) and others. nVidia Graphic Model: C0000-CFFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS D0000-D27FF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*1) DC000-DFFFF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*2) E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS Other Model: C0000-CC7FF : Reserved for Video BIOS CC800-CEFFF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*1) DC000-DFFFF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*2) E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS (Note) *1: This area becomes free by disabling the Internal Network Option ROM option under Config and Network in BIOS Setup Utility. *2: This area becomes free by disabling the USB BIOS Support option under Config and USB in BIOS Setup Utility. Usable Area: The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386. D2800-DBFFF (nVidia Graphic Model) CF000-DBFFF (Other Model) But certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems. The addresses vary and depend on the design of each Operating System. Restrictions ------------ Passwords can be set with the passphrase feature, however, that feature is supported by Windows 2000 and Windows XP only.
