What This Package Does ---------------------- This ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility updates the BIOS (system program) stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. This error message appears when firmware level of attached serial ATA hard drive is old. - (Fix) Warning Beep may sound when you eject system from UltraBase X4 even though system is attached to UltraBase X4 with standby state. - (New) Enable some power management feature to extend battery life. - (Fix) Improve the integrated fingerprint reader functionality. - (New) Add new item in the BIOS Setup Utility to initialize template data in the integrated fingerprint reader. Note: New item "Erase Fingerprint Data" is found by clicking Security then click Fingerprint at BIOS setup menu. - (New) Add new item in the BIOS Setup Utility to disable password authentication for the integrated fingerprint preboot authentication. Note: New item "Password Authentication" is found by clicking Security then click Fingerprint. This item is only available when "Security Mode" is seleted as "High". - (Fix) The system may not boot from USB floppy disk drive when the power of Bluetooth is turned on. - (Fix) Some BIOS Setup items are not configured by using Remote CMOS Update Utility. - (Fix) The item "Execution Prevention" in the BIOS Setup Utility is not locked by supervisor password. - (Fix) LCD display may be turned off after entering secondary hard drive password. This symptom may appear on following condition: System with UltraBase X4 should be in standby mode and then attach secondary Hard drive which has Hard drive password. After attaching Hard drive, System resumes from standby mode and password prompt appears and then enter password. LCD display may be turned off just after entering password. - (New) Support for ThinkPad X4 Dock. Note: BIOS and EasyEject Utility need to be updated before you attach the system to ThinkPad X4 Dock. EasyEject Utility needs to be 75U202WW or later. Note: The "Internal Bluetooth Device" option is found by clicking Config then click Network. - (New) Support for new models based on the Intel Pentium M Processor 778. - (Fix) USB devices connected to UltraBase X4 or ThinkPad X4 Dock may not be recognized in Boot Menu by pressing F12 during POST. <2.02 (74ET57WW)> Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00 (or higher). - (Fix) With BIOS 74ET4AWW (Version 1.19) or later, the system will shutdown during Wake On LAN with a Ultrabay Slim Second HDD adapter even if no password is set in the second HDD. - (Fix) POST error appears on power-on, just after power off at BIOS password prompt with a USB floppy drive or USB HDD. <2.05 (74ET60WW)> Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00 (or higher). - (Fix) The CardBus Controller register setting was fixed. - (Fix) The problem that happens in production line was fixed. - (Fix) Machine may hang up when boot device is changed in BIOS setup. - (New) Added new item in the BIOS Setup Utility menu to allow the system startup without pressing ESC key on POST 2010 warning message. Note: The "Boot after message for HDD compatibility without having to press " option is found by clicking Startup. - (Fix) Intel Pentium M Processor and Centrino logos displayed on screen during POST were updated. - (Fix) POST hang may be caused when damaged HDD is attached. - (New) Added new item "ThinkPad NumLock" in the BIOS Setup Utility menu. It's found by clicking Config then click Keyboard/Mouse. If you select "Independent", NumLock on the ThinkPad computer can be disabled independently regardless of the NumLock state of the external keyboard. If NumLock on the ThinkPad computer is enabled, NumLock on the external keyboard will also be enabled. If you select "Synchronized", NumLock on the ThinkPad computer and NumLock on the external keyboard are synchronized. Note: "ThinkPad NumLock" menu item is available only when the Embedded Controller Program (H8 controller firmware) is also updated to version 1.01 (74HT26WW) or later. <2.06 (74ET61WW)> Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00 (or higher). - (New) Added new items "Modem Device" and "Infrared Device" in the BIOS Setup Utility menu, to hide the device from Operating System. Modem Device: Config -> Modem -> Modem Device [Enabled/Hidden] If you select "Enabled", you can turn the internal modem device on or off. If you select "Hidden", the internal modem device is hidden from the Operating System. Infrared Device: Config -> Infrared -> Infrared Device [Enabled/Hidden] If you select "Enabled", you can enable or disable infrared device. If you select "Hidden", the infrared device is hidden from the Operating System. Note: The setting of these items is protected by Supervisor password. - (Fix) When the LCD is closed and opened, the screen resolution may be changed. <2.07 (74ET62WW)> Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00 (or higher). - (New) When a system boots with a USB memory key, a DOS drive letter is assigned to a FAT partition in a USB memory key even when a system does not boot from it. On previous version of BIOS, the DOS drive letter was assigned only when the system booted from a USB memory key. - (Fix) LCD display may not turn on after display off/on operation. <2.08 (74ET63WW)> Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00 (or higher). - (Fix) Icons on the desktop will be rearranged by a LCD cover close/open action. Need to upgrade a display driver to version 6.14.10.4693 or later to fix this problem. Updating BIOS ------------- Notes: - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS. - If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to your computer, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. 1. Print these instructions or display on another computer. 2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 3. Start Windows 2000/XP and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer. 4. Extract this package onto the hard drive. 5. Click the Start button, then click Run. 6. Specify the file name with the full path name where you extracted the package. (e.g. C:\Temp\74UJ14US.EXE) Then click OK. Hint: For unattended update, specify the file name with options "-s -a -s". (e.g. C:\Temp\74UJ14US.EXE -s -a -s) The BIOS is updated without any user interaction. 7. Follow the instructions on the screen. Depending on the operating system configuration, restarting operating system and rerunning this BIOS update utility may be required. In this case, the following message will appear on the screen. Example of a message) "DeviceIoControl() returns 2. Please restart your operating system and execute the BIOS or Embedded Controller update utility again." Windows will shut down automatically and ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility screen appears. 8. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. 9. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 10. Select Update system program and follow the instructions on the screen. Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off. Initializing BIOS ----------------- In some cases, it may be a good idea to try BIOS initialization when you have some troubles. To initialize the BIOS settings: 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Press F9 key to load default configuration. 5. Select Yes. 6. Press F10 key to save default configuration and exit. 7. Select Yes. After the initialization has been completed, the system restarts automatically. Memory Map Information ---------------------- Reserved Area: The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by BIOS and others. C0000-CFFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS D0000-D3FFF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*1) DC000-DFFFF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*2) E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS Note: *1: This area becomes free by disabling the Internal Network Option ROM option under Config and Network in the BIOS Setup Utility. *2: This area becomes free by disabling the USB BIOS Support option under Config and USB in the BIOS Setup Utility. Usable Area: The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386. D4000-DBFFF But certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems. The addresses vary and depend on the design of each Operating System.
