[New functions or enhancements] - Enhancement of security function on power-on: When hard disk password is set, regardless of other passwords settings, Wake On Lan from power off state does not work. - Support for a new type of video memory. No function changes. [Problem fixes] Nothing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DETERMINING WHICH VERSION IS INSTALLED 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version. 5. Turn off the computer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: - This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 (or higher). Obtain the additional package, Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 (or higher), and update the Embedded Controller Program in the system with it. - If you need to update Embedded Controller Program as well as the BIOS, update BIOS first. - This program is language independent and can be used with any language system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATE INSTRUCTIONS Notes: - If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the BIOS. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Version Information section. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS. - If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to your computer, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment. Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. There are three ways for installation. (A) Automatic update with ThinkPad Software Installer (B) Manual update (C) Unattended update (A) Automatic Update Use the ThinkPad Software Installer version 3.01.0503 or higher. The ThinkPad Software Installer will check both installed program in your ThinkPad and IBM Web site. Then download and update the program automatically if a newer version is available. Refer to the ThinkPad Software Installer package for details. (B) Manual Update Refer to the Manual Update section. (C) Unattended Update Refer to the Unattended Update section. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- INITIALIZING BIOS BIOS Initialization is a suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS settings: 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Press F9 key to load default configuration. 5. Select Yes. 6. Press F10 key to save default configuration and exit. 7. Select Yes. After the initialization has been completed, the system restarts automatically. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VERSION INFORMATION The following versions of BIOS have been released to date. Modem: Config -> Modem -> Modem Device Infrared: Config -> Infrared -> Infrared Device - (Fix) Some of BIOS Setup menu items can not be updated with Remote CMOS Update Utility. - (Fix) Fast-IR data transfer speed on Windows XP may be slow. - (Fix) After the computer is turned on, it may not be booted with the error message, "Operating System not found". <1.04> (76ET24WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 (or higher). - (New) Support for a new type of video memory. No function is changed. <1.02> (76ET22WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 (or higher). - (New) (Initial release) Support for ThinkPad R52 (Machine Types 1846, 1847, 1848, 1849, 1850 and 1870). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MANUAL UPDATE Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. 1. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 2. Start Windows XP/2000 and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer. 3. Save the BIOS Update Utility file (e.g. xxxxxxxx.exe) on the Windows Desktop or in the hard disk drive. 4. Double-click the saved file on the Windows Desktop, or start Explorer, open the folder where the file was saved and then double-click the saved file. 5. Follow the instructions on the screen. Depending on the operating system configuration, restarting the operating system and rerunning this BIOS update utility may be required. In this case, the following message will appear. "DeviceIoControl() returns 2 Please restart your operating system and execute the BIOS or Embedded Controller update utility again." Windows will shut down automatically and ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility screen appears. 6. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. 7. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 8. Select Update system program and follow the instruction on the screen. After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off. Finally delete the file saved in the step 3. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UNATTENDED UPDATE This procedure is intended only for system administrators. At the command prompt, specify the BIOS Update Utility file name with options -s -a -s (e.g. C:\Temp\xxxxxxxx.EXE -s -a -s) and press the Enter key to start installation process. If you have saved the file to a different location, specify the location, instead. The BIOS is updated without any user interaction. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BIOS INFORMATION Memory Map Information ---------------------- Reserved Area: The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by BIOS and others. C0000-CFFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS D0000-D3FFF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*1) DC000-DFFFF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*2) E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS Notes: *1: This area becomes free by disabling the Internal Network Option ROM option under Config and Network in IBM BIOS Setup Utility. This choice will disable PXE and WOL features. *2: This area becomes free by disabling the USB BIOS Support option under Config and USB in the IBM BIOS Setup Utility. This choice does not affect using USB devices in Windows operating systems. Usable Area: The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386. D4000-DBFFF Note: Certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems.
