Obtain the additional package, BIOS Version 1.14 or higher, and update the BIOS in the system with it. - If you need to update the BIOS as well as the Embedded Controller Program, update BIOS first. - This program is language independent and can be used with any language system. What This Package Does ---------------------- This Embedded Controller Program Update Utility updates the embedded controller firmware stored in the ThinkPad computer to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. --------------------------------------------------------------------- CHANGES IN THIS RELEASE [Important Updates] Nothing. Updating Embedded Controller Program ------------------------------------ Notes: - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the Embedded Controller Program in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS. - If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to your computer, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. Automatic installation: - Use Software Installer version 3.01.0503 or higher. Software Installer will check both the installed program on your ThinkPad and our Web site, then download and update the program automatically if a newer version is available. Manual installation: 1. Print these instructions or display on another computer. 2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 3. Start Windows XP/2000 and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer. 4. Save the Save the Embedded Controller Program Update Utility file from the Web site and store the file into either a temporary directory or on the Windows desktop. 6. Double-click the saved file on the Windows Desktop and follow the instructions on the screen. OR If you saved the file into a temporary directory, click Start, then click Run. In the Open dialog box, specify the utility filename with the full path name where you stored Embedded Controller Program Update Utility file (e.g. C:\Temp\77HJ03US.EXE) and then press the Enter key. 8. Follow the instructions on the screen. Depending on the operating system configuration, restarting the operating system and rerunning this BIOS update utility may be required. In this case, the following message will appear. "DeviceIoControl() returns 2 Please restart your operating system and execute the BIOS or Embedded Controller update utility again." Windows will shut down automatically and ThinkPad Embedded Controller Program Update Utility screen appears. 9. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. 10. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 11. Select Update embedded controller program and follow the instructions on the screen. After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off. Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the system until the update has been completed. If you turn off or suspend the system while the update is still in progress, the system board may have to be replaced. 12. Turn on the system. 13. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left of the screen, press the F1 key. 14. Select Start setup utility. If you have set a supervisor password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you type in the password. 15. Verify the Embedded Controller Version. Unattended update installation: (This procedure is intended only for system administrators) 1. At the command prompt, specify the Embedded Controller Program Update Utility file name with options "-s -a -s". (e.g. C:\Temp\77HJ03US.EXE -s -a -s). 2. Press the Enter key to start installation process. If you have saved the file to a different location, specify the location, instead. The Embedded Controller Program is updated without any user interaction. Start the ThinkPad Configuration program. Click Start, select All Programs (or Programs), select ThinkVantage, and then click ThinkPad Configuration. 2. Click the System Information icon. 3. Click the BIOS information tab. BIOS version and Embedded Controller version will be displayed. 4. Click OK to exit. Checking the version in the BIOS Setup Utility: 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Check Embedded Controller Version and BIOS Version. 5. Turn off the computer.
