This program is language independent and can be used with any language system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CHANGES IN THIS RELEASE [Important Updates] Nothing. [Problem fixes] Nothing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DETERMINING WHICH VERSION IS INSTALLED There are two ways for version check. (A) On Windows (B) On BIOS Setup Utility (A) On Windows 1. Start the ThinkPad Configuration program. Click Start, select All Programs (or Programs), select ThinkVantage, and then click ThinkPad Configuration. 2. Click the System Information icon. 3. Click the BIOS information tab. BIOS version and Embedded Controller version will be displayed. 4. Click OK to exit. (B) On BIOS Setup Utility 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version. 5. Turn off the computer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: - If Windows Vista is already installed on your system, then you must use the diskette format of this BIOS update. - This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or higher. Obtain the additional package, Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or higher, and update the Embedded Controller Program in the system with it. - If you need to update Embedded Controller Program as well as the BIOS, update BIOS first. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATING THE BIOS Notes: - If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the BIOS. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Version Information section. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS. - If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - Depending on the operating system configuration, restarting the operating system and rerunning this BIOS update utility may be required. In this case, the following message will appear. "DeviceIoControl() returns 2 Please restart your operating system and execute the BIOS or Embedded Controller update utility again." - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in the RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) or similar environment. Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU DO THAT WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. There are following ways for installation. (A) Automatic install (B) Manual install (C) Unattended install (A) Automatic Install Use the ThinkVantage System Update or Software Installer. The ThinkVantage System Update or Software Installer will check both installed program in your ThinkPad and our Web site. Then download and update the program automatically if a newer version is available. Refer to the ThinkVantage System Update or Software Installer package for details. (B) Manual Update Refer to the Manual Update section. (C) Unattended Update Refer to the Unattended Update section. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- INITIALIZING BIOS BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS settings: 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Press the F9 key to load default configuration. 5. Select Yes. 6. Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit. 7. Select Yes. 8. Power off or restart the computer. (A drive letter had been assigned to the USB memory device only if the computer was set in BIOS to be booted from the USB memory device.) <1.58> (78ET68WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or higher. - (Fix) If both "System standby" and "System hibernates" options of "Running on batteries" setting are enabled in the Power Option properties, and when the computer runs on battery and hibernates by the "System hibernates" option, the computer may stop responding. <1.57> (78ET67WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or higher. - (Fix) The spindle motor of the CD/DVD drive does not stop even while the CD/DVD drive is not accessed. <1.55> (78ET65WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or higher. - (Fix) The computer may not be powered on when an option memory is installed. - (Fix) The computer may hang if the hard drive is damaged. <1.54> (78ET64WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or higher. - (Fix) If the hard drive is detached from the computer, the error message, 0200: Failure Fixed Disk 7, is displayed without booting Intel Boot Agent after power-on. <1.53> (78ET63WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or higher. - (New) Support for new types of memory. <1.48> (78ET58WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or higher. - (New) Support for ThinkPad NumLock. A new ThinkPad NumLock option is added to Keyboard/Mouse of Config menu in BIOS Setup Utility. Settings [Independent] : The NumLock on the ThinkPad computer can be disabled independently regardless of the NumLock state of the external keyboard. If the NumLock on the ThinkPad computer is enabled, the NumLock on the external keyboard will also be enabled. [Synchronized] : The NumLock on both the ThinkPad computer and the external keyboard are synchronized. - (Fix) CGA font characters are not displayed on the screen with programs for DOS. - (Fix) Intel Pentium M Processor and Centrino logos displayed on screen after power-on is modified. <1.47> (78ET57WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00. - (Fix) The TrackPoint cursor may get uncontrolled with application programs for DOS or PC-Doctor for DOS. <1.46> (78ET56WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00. - (Fix) Holding the power-on button to long may cause the power to turn off shortly after power-on. - (Fix) An error message may be displayed on the screen if the power button is pressed to turn on and off. - (Fix) F1, F12, Access IBM and Enter keys may not work at the logo screen during boot. <1.07> (78ET36WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00. - (Fix) An error appears on power-on, just after powering off at a password prompt with a newly attached USB storage device. - (Fix) A CardBus Controller setting was wrong. - (Fix) The computer may hang up when a boot device is changed in Startup menu of BIOS Setup Utility. - (Fix) After turning on the computer, it may hang or be shut off freely very intermittently. - (Fix) (Windows 2000 only) The CPU usage becomes always 100% after resuming normal operation from standby mode. - (Fix) (DOS only) Data transfer speed of USB becomes slow. <1.06> (78ET35WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00. - (Fix) The system may not be ready after power-on very intermittently. <1.05> (78ET34WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00. - (New) (Initial release) Support for ThinkPad R51e. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MANUAL UPDATE This section assumes to use Internet Explorer and Explorer. Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU DO THAT WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. Downloading files 1. Click once on the underlined file name with the left mouse button. Once this is done, a pop-up window will appear. 2. In this pop-up window, choose (using the left mouse button) the directory you would like to download the file to and click the "Save" button. A different window will appear and the download will begin and complete without your assistance. 3. Once the download has completed, there may or may not be a message stating that the download completed successfully. Updating BIOS 4. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 5. Make sure to be logged on with administrative privileges. 6. Open an Explorer and locate the directory where the file was saved. 7. Double-click the saved file. 8. Follow the instructions on the screen. Windows will shut down automatically and ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility screen appears. 9. Select "Read this first..." from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. 10. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 11. Select Update system program and follow the instructions on the screen. After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off. Finally delete the file saved in the step 2. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UNATTENDED UPDATE This procedure is intended only for system administrators. - Refer to the Manual Install section, and save the files. - At the command line, execute the BIOS Utility (xxxxxxxx.exe) with the -s -a -s options. (For example) [Path where the files were saved]\xxxxxxxx.exe -s -a -s The BIOS is updated without any user interaction. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BIOS INFORMATION Memory Map Information ---------------------- Reserved Area: The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by BIOS and others. C0000-CBFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS CC000-CE5FF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*1) E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS Note: *1: This area becomes free by disabling the Internal Network Option ROM option under Config and Network in the BIOS Setup Utility. This choice will disable PXE and WOL features. Usable Area: The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386. CE600-DFFFF Note: Certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems.
