What This Package Does ---------------------- This ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility updates the BIOS (system program including the Embedded Controller(EC) program) stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. (BIOS) <1.07> - [Important] (On Windows Vista only) The computer may stop booting from the hard disk drive with the following message. (BIOS) 2100: Initialization error on HDD0 (Main hard disk drive) - (Fix) The system may fail to boot from an optical drive. (BIOS) <1.08> - [Important] This BIOS contains a critical processor microcode update to improve system reliability. Lenovo highly recommends that you apply this BIOS update. - (New) Upgraded to the latest microcode update for Intel Core 2 processor. (BIOS) <1.09> - (Fix) The CPU clock may down during charging the battery. (EC) <1.10> - (New) The firmware version of TPM chip was upped to 1.2.0B.0D. (BIOS) Note: BIOS update on the PC with Revision 0D TPM chip and with 7JET25WW BIOS or later versions to 7JET24WW or older versions is inhibited. - (Fix) The data transfer rate is extremely slow using IBA(Intel Boot Agent) PXE protocol. (BIOS) - (Fix) An error may happen on updating the BIOS. (BIOS) - (Fix) Provided BIOS level solution for the issue of extended video model disabled after undock/dock operartion. (BIOS) - (Fix) Fingerprint authentication fails once at power-on time, power-on password prompt appears immediately. (BIOS) - (Fix) Even if the password was not actually changed under CSS (Client Security Solution), a message showing it being changed may appear and authentication may be failed even by entering the password. (BIOS) <1.11> - (Fix) The process of Fingerprint authentication at power-on was improved. (BIOS) - (Fix) Memory address more than 4GB can't be accessed under Vista WindowsPE. (BIOS) - (Fix) Intermittent errors, such as device unrecognized, may occur at wake-up after BIOS configuration was changed in BIOS Setup during hibenation. (BIOS) - (Fix) A Post error may intermittently occur at wake-up from hibernation after ThinkPad BIOS Setting for Windows was run. (BIOS) - (Fix) This BIOS contains a workaround of resolution change issue. When using an Intel Graphics model on a minidock with an external monitor set to SXGA, the resolution will intermittently be changed in certain docking/undocking situations switch to XGA. (BIOS) Updating BIOS ------------- Notes: - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS. - If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to your computer, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. 1. Print these instructions or display on another computer. 2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 3. Start Windows XP and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer. 4. Save this package onto the hard drive. 5. For Windows Vista, click Start, select All Programs, select Accessories, then click Run... For Windows XP, click Start, then click Run... 6. Specify the file name with the full path name where you saved the package. (e.g. C:\Temp\7JUJ09US.EXE) and then click OK. 7. Follow the instructions on the screen. 8. After a License Agreement, extract this package to an appropriate directory. (e.g. C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7JUJ09US) 9. Click the Start button, then click Run. 10. Specify a WINUPTP.EXE with the full path name where you extracted the package. (e.g. C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7JUJ09US\WINUPTP.EXE) and then click OK. Note: For unattended update, specify the file name with options "-s". (e.g. C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7JUJ09US\WINUPTP.EXE -s) The BIOS is updated without any user interaction. To view the update result, refer to the WINUPTP.log file created at the same directory of the package. 11. Follow the instructions on the screen. 12. Select 'Update ThinkPad BIOS' and follow the instructions on the screen. Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. After the update has been completed, the program shows a message 'Flash Update has been successfully completed...' Press 'Yes' to restart the system. Do the following to make sure the BIOS is updated correctly. 13. Turn off the computer. 14. Turn on the computer. 15. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. 16. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 17. Verify the BIOS Version. 18. Turn off the computer. Initializing BIOS ----------------- BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS setups: 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. 4. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If you have set a supervisor password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you enter the password. 5. Press the F9 key to load default configuration. 6. Select Yes. 7. Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit. 8. Select Yes. After the initialization has been completed, the system restarts automatically. Note: After initialization you may need to re-apply some settings that you had changed previously. BIOS Information ---------------- Each version of the System Program Service Utility contains the following system program (BIOS) and the Embedded Controller program. The BIOS Version and the the Embedded Controller version number can be viewed by entering BIOS Setup Utility. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. 4. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 5. Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version. 6. Turn off the computer. Memory Map Information ---------------------- Reserved Area: The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by the system program (BIOS) and others. C0000-CE7FF : Reserved for Video BIOS CE800-D07FF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*1) DC000-DFFFF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*2) E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS Notes: *1: This area becomes free by disabling the Internal Network Option ROM option under Config and Network in BIOS Setup Utility. This choice will disable PXE and WOL features. *2: This area becomes free by disabling the USB BIOS Support option under Config and USB in the BIOS Setup Utility. This choice does not affect using USB devices in Windows operating systems. Usable Area: The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386. D0800-DBFFF Note: Certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems. The addresses vary and depend on the design of each Operating System.
