Version 1.09 Issue date October 24, 2007 *1: If Windows Vista 64-bit is already installed on your system, then you must use the BIOS Update CD for the BIOS update. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WHAT THIS PACKAGE DOES This package updates the BIOS (including system program and Embedded Controller program) stored in the ThinkPad computer to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. If Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit version has been installed on your system, use the BIOS Update CD for the BIOS update. This program is language independent and can be used with any language system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CHANGES IN THIS RELEASE Version 1.08 and 1.09 [Important updates] Nothing. [New functions or enhancements] - (Intel video models only) A design change that the screen is set to extended desktop mode with an external display and "When I close the lid of my portable computer" option in the power option is set to "Do nothing", and when the lid is closed; (Old) The extended display mode is canceled and video output is switched to the external display only, so icons on the desktop will be moved. (New) The extended display mode is kept and video output is not switched, so icons on the desktop are not moved. - Function enhancement of capturing the BIOS configuration information on the computer by BIOS Settings Capture/Playback Utility. [Problem fixes] - Once a fingerprint matching fails on the fingerprint sensor at power-on time, a power-on password prompt may appear immediately without retries of fingerprint detection. - The data transfer rate of hard drive is slow in SATA AHCI mode. - The computer may hang at the power-on if device configuration is changed in the BIOS Setup immediately after resuming normal operation from hibernation mode. - An error may occur at the power-on after ThinkPad BIOS Settings for Windows runs and then the computer goes into hibernation mode. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DETERMINING WHICH VERSION IS INSTALLED 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Check the BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version. 5. Turn off the computer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTES - This package does not work on Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit systems. Use the BIOS Update CD for BIOS updates for Windows Vista 64-bit systems. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATING THE BIOS Notes: - If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the BIOS. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Version Information section. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS. - If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in the RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) or similar environment. Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU DO THAT WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. Manual Update 1. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the target computer. 2. Start Windows Vista 32-bit, XP and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer. 3. Double-click 7quj04us.exe to extract it to your hard drive. The default location is C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7quj04us.exe 4. For Windows Vista, click Start, select All Programs, select Accessories, then click Run... For Windows XP, click Start, then click Run... 5. Specify WINUPTP.EXE with the full path name where you saved the package, then click OK. Example: C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7quj04us\WINUPTP.EXE 6. Follow the instructions on the screen. 7. Select 'Update ThinkPad BIOS' and follow the instructions on the screen. 8. After the update has been completed, the program shows a message 'Flash Update has been successfully completed...'. Follow the instructions on the screen to restart the computer. Unattended Update This procedure is intended only for system administrators. The BIOS is updated without any user interaction. - Refer to the Manual Update section, and download and extract the files. - At the command line, execute WINUPTP.EXE with the -S option. Example: C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7quj04us\WINUPTP -s To view the update result, refer to the WINUPTP.log file created at the same directory of the package. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- INITIALIZING BIOS BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS settings: 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Press the F9 key to load default configuration. 5. Select Yes. 6. Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit. 7. Select Yes. 8. Restart the computer.
