Obtain the additional package, BIOS Version 1.18 (or higher), and update the BIOS in the system with it. - If you need to update the BIOS as well as the Embedded Controller Program, update the BIOS first. - This program is language independent and can be used with any language system. What This Diskette Does ----------------------- The Embedded Controller Program Service Diskette given here can update the embedded controller program (H8 controller firmware) stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions. This release supports the following system: - ThinkPad T23 To determine if you have to update the embedded controller program, refer to the Summary of Changes section. To update the embedded controller program, refer to the Installation instructions section. Installation instructions ------------------------- NOTES: - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the Embedded Controller Program in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the Embedded Controller Program. - If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - Make sure the Embedded Controller Program Service Diskette is write-protected. 1. Print these instructions or display on another computer. 2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 3. Insert the Embedded Controller Program Service Diskette into the diskette drive and turn on the computer. 4. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. 5. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 6. Select Update Embedded Controller program and follow the instruction on the screen. NOTE: If you are updating the Embedded Controller Program through the USB external diskette drive, it will take quite a long time to complete reading the Embedded Controller Program file, but it is normal. Continue the update. Warning: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. Do the following to make sure the Embedded Controller Program is updated correctly. 7. Make sure there is no diskette in the diskette drive, then turn on the computer. 8. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the Access IBM button. 9. Double-click Start setup utility. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If you have set a supervisor password, the IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you enter the password. 10. Verify the Embedded Controller Version. 11. Turn off the computer. Embedded Controller Program Information --------------------------------------- Each version of the Embedded Controller Program Service Diskette contains the following Embedded Controller Program. Also the supported BIOS versions are shown below. The versions of Embedded Controller Program and BIOS can be viewed by running ThinkPad Configuration from the operating system and then selecting the System Information button, or by entering IBM BIOS Setup Utility. To enter the IBM BIOS Setup Utility: 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the Access IBM button. 4. Double-click Start setup utility. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 5. Check Embedded Controller Version and BIOS Version. 6. Turn off the computer.
