IBM ThinkPad September 19, 2003 DVD/CD-RW combo Firmware Update Utility Release 4 (FWDR1401) ====================================================================== What This Package Does ---------------------- This utility will examine your system configuration and detect all DVD/CD-RW drives installed. It will then check the firmware revision of the drive and judge whether your system requires a firmware update or not. If required, it will prompt you to run the appropriate firmware update program for your drive. Please consult with documentations accompanied with your ThinkPad system. If you encounter a problem attaching a FDD to your ThinkPad, please call your local Help Center. You know a model you have: Determine a diskette image file to download from model/diskette image filename list. Download a target file and build a diskette(you need a formatted diskette). You have multiple models: 1. Place blank, formatted floppy diskettes in the A: drive. Four diskettes are required. 2. Close all open applications 3. Click the files link above to download the files from the Web page. 4. When prompted, select a drive and directory in which to save the downloaded files. 5. Run the Fwdr1x01.exe ('x' indicates numetic character) file you downloaded to create the bootable diskette. 6. Follow the instructions on the screen to create the diskette. Continue with Fwdr1x02 and Fwdr1x04. 7. When all the diskettes have been created, place one of the diskettes in the ThinkPad system that has the DVD/CDRW drive to be updated. 8. Boot the system from the diskette. 9. Drives that have been detected will be listed in the upper area of the Main Menu. If a drive that requires an update is detected, it will be shown with a blinking mark on the left. If you find no blinking mark, your DVD/CDRW drive has latest firmware and no need to update or the update firmware is not for your drive. Please remove this diskette and shutdown your ThinkPad. It will prompt to replace with a specified diskette, in case of supported drive firmware is not in an inserted diskette. 10. Follow the instructions on the screen to update the necessary DVD/CDRW drives. 11. When the installation is complete, remove the Firmware Update Utility diskette from floppy disk drive and power off your ThinkPad system. Do not restart the ThinkPad system with the ctrl-alt-del keys. <> Please do not power off the ThinkPad during firmware being updated. Or your DVD/CD-RW drive may NOT be usable anymore. NOTES: - The update utility doesn't find a DVD/CD-RW drive in a Docking Station. In this case, please remove the drive and install it in a device bay of your ThinkPad and then boot this diskette. If you encounter a problem installing DVD/CD-RW drive into your ThinkPad, please call your local Help Center. - The diskette contains several executable files other than FW.EXE. DO NOT RUN THESE PROGRAMS. Running these programs other than FW.EXE could ruin your DVD/CD-RW drive. - In Windows XP, after updating the firmware, boot the machine and shut it down again.
