IBM ThinkPad July 30, 2002 DVD Firmware Update Utility Release 2 ====================================================================== What This Package Does ---------------------- This utility will examine your system configuration and detect all DVD drives installed. It will then check the firmware revision of the drive and determine whether your system requires a firmware update. If required, it will prompt you to run the appropriate firmware update program for your drive. This package provides firmware for the following DVD drives: Model (Manufacturer) - GD-S200 (Hitachi-LG Data Storage) | - GDR-8081N (Hitachi-LG Data Storage) - SR-8175 (MKE) | - SR-8176 (MKE) * "|" at beggining of line indicates a new entry from last release. If you don't know the manufacturer/model, check Device Manager. The following is a list of IBM ThinkPad systems which may include those DVD drives: - ThinkPad A20m, A20p, A21e, A21m, A21p, A22e, A22m, A22p - ThinkPad A30, A30p, A31, A31p - ThinkPad T20, T21, T22, T23 - ThinkPad i Series 1800 Released Versions ----------------- Release 1 Initial release Release 2 New firmwares for new drives. Please consult with documentations accompanied with your ThinkPad system. If you encounter a problem attaching an FDD to your ThinkPad, please call your local Help Center. - The diskette contains several executable files other than FW.EXE. DO NOT RUN THESE PROGRAMS. Running these programs other than FW.EXE could ruin your DVD drive. - The update utility can not identify a DVD drive in the docking station. In this case, remove the drive from the docking station and install it in a device bay of your ThinkPad system and then boot this diskette. If you encounter a problem installing the DVD drive into your ThinkPad, call your local Help Center. - In Windows XP, after updating the firmware, boot the machine and shut it down again. This is necessary the first time for the registry changes are recognition. <> Please do not power off the ThinkPad while the firmware is being updated or your DVD drive may NOT be usable anymore. 1. Place a blank, formatted floppy diskette in the floppy disk drive. 2. Close all open applications. 3. Click the EXE link from the web page download the firmware update. 4. When prompted, select a drive and directory in which to save the downloaded file. 5. Run the EXE file you downloaded to create the bootable diskette and follow the instructions on the screen to create the diskette. 6. When the diskette has been created, place the diskette in the IBM ThinkPad system that has the DVD drive to be updated. 7. Boot the system from the diskette. 8. DVD drives that have been detected will be listed in the upper area of the Main Menu. If a drive that requires an update is detected, it will be shown with a blinking mark on the left. If you find no blinking mark, your DVD drive has latest firmware and there no need to update or the firmware update is not for your DVD drive. Remove the diskette and power off your ThinkPad. 9. Follow the instructions on the screen to update the DVD drives. 10. When the installation is complete, remove the Firmware Update Utility diskette from floppy disk drive and power off your ThinkPad system.
