IBM ThinkPad X22, X23, X24 July 30, 2002 Hard Disk Drive Firmware Update Utility Diskette Version 1.0 ====================================================================== Notice: ------- This program is language independent and can be used with any language system. What This Diskette Does ----------------------- This diskette performs firmware update that is stored in the HDD (Hard Disk Drive). Firmware update will fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. This diskette will automatically check the current version of HDD firmware and determine whether it should be updated or not. The supported ThinkPad models are as follows. - ThinkPad X22, X23, X24 And also the supported HDD models are as follows. - DK23DA-20 (20GB, HITACHI) - DK23DA-30 (30GB, HITACHI) Hint: Firmware is programming embedded in hardware, which controls low-level hardware operations. To determine if you should update the HDD firmware, refer to the Summary of Changes section. To update the HDD firmware, refer to the Updating Firmware section. Released Versions ----------------- Version 1.0 Initial release for HITACHI HDD 20GB (DK23DA-20) and 30GB (DK23DA-30) Summary of Changes ------------------ Where: Diskette version (New) New Function or Enhancement (Fix) Correction to existing function <1.0> - (Fix) The following HDD models generate some clunk sounds. Updating Firmware ----------------- This diskette will automatically check the current version of HDD firmware and determine whether it should be updated or not. Notes: - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the HDD firmware. - If your computer is attached to any kinds of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. (Except the ThinkPad UltraBase X2 option. You can attach the option and use the embedded diskette drive in it.) - This diskette can't identify a HDD in any kinds of docking station with the exception of the ThinkPad UltraBase X2 option. 1. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 2. Insert the Hard Disk Drive Firmware Update Utility Diskette into the diskette drive and turn on the computer. 3. If the message, No new firmware found., is displayed at the bottom line on the screen, like below, you do not need to update the firmware. Press the Esc key and quit the program. Follow the instruction on screen to proceed with update. Note: If you are updating the HDD firmware through the external diskette drive (USB type, not the diskette drive in the ThinkPad UltraBase X2), it will take quite a long time to complete reading the HDD firmware, but it is normal. Continue the update. Warning: Do not turn off the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE HARD DISK DRIVE MAY BECOME DAMAGED. 5. When update is complete, power-off and power-on the computer for the update to become effective. Note: After HDD firmware update is complete and Windows starts, Windows may detect a new device (HDD) and ask you to reboot the system. This is a normal behavior of Windows, so follow instructions on the screen to reboot the system when asked.
