IBM ThinkPad X22, X23, X24 November 22, 2002 Hard Disk Drive Firmware Update Utility Version 1.0 ====================================================================== Notice: ------- This program is language independent and can be used with any language system. What This Package Does ---------------------- This utility performs updated the firmware that is stored in the HDD (Hard Disk Drive). This firmware update will fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. This utility will automatically check the current version of the HDD firmware and determine whether it should be updated or not. The supported ThinkPad models are as follows. - ThinkPad X22, X23, X24 And also the supported HDD models are as follows. - DK23DA-20 (20GB, HITACHI) - DK23DA-30 (30GB, HITACHI) The supported operating systems are as follows: - Windows 95 OSR2 or later(*1) - Windows 98 - Windows 98 Second Edition(*2) - Windows Me - Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6 or later - Windows 2000 - Windows XP (Home Edition and Professional) (Note) *1: See the Known Limitations section. *2: Before using the Hard Disk Drive Firmware Update Utility with Windows 98 Second Edition, IBM recommends that you apply the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from the Microsoft Web Site Knowledge Base Article ID Q239887. Hint: Firmware is programming embedded in hardware, which controls low-level hardware operations. To determine if you should update the HDD firmware, refer to the Summary of Changes section. To update the HDD firmware, refer to the Updating Firmware section. Updating Firmware ----------------- This utility will automatically check the current version of HDD firmware and determine whether it should be updated or not. Notes: - As written in the LCCM Compatibility and Configuration Guide, remove the Power-on password prior to updating the HDD firmware in LCCM (LANClient Control Manager) or similar environment. - An AC adapter and a charged battery pack is needed to update the HDD firmware. - If your computer is attached to any kinds of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. (Except the ThinkPad UltraBase X2 option.) - This utility can not identify a HDD in any kinds of docking station with the exception of the ThinkPad UltraBase X2 option. - If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to the ThinkPad system, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. 1. Print these instructions or display on another computer. 2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 3. Start Windows 95/98/Me or start Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer. 4. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive. 5. Click the Start button, then click Run. 6. Specify the file name with the full path name where you extracted the package. (e.g. C:\Temp\FWLH01US.EXE) Then click OK. 7. Follow the instructions on the screen. Windows shutting down automatically and Firmware Update Utility screen appears. 8. If the message, No new firmware found., is displayed at the bottom line on the screen, like below, you do not need to update the firmware. Press the Esc key and quit the program. Follow the instruction on screen to proceed with update. Warning: Do not turn off the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE HARD DISK DRIVE MAY BECOME DAMAGED. 10. When update is complete, power-off and power-on the computer for the update to become effective. Note: After HDD firmware update is complete and Windows starts, Windows may detect a new device (HDD) and ask you to reboot the system. This is a normal behavior of Windows, so follow instructions on the screen to reboot the system when asked.
