Flash BIOS update - bootable diskette version for IBM(R) NetVista(R) 2254, 2256, 2257, 6336, 6337, 6339, 6341, 6342, 6346, 6347, and 6348 systems 21JT19A README This package updates the basic input/output system (BIOS) on IBM NetVista(R) model 2254-xxx, 2256-xxx, 2257-xxx, 6336-xxx, 6337-xxx, 6339-xxx, 6341-xxx, 6342-xxx, 6346-xxx, 6347-xxx, and 6348-xxx computers. BIOS is programming that controls low-level hardware operations, including interactions with diskette drives, hard disk drives, and the keyboard. The BIOS is stored on a chip. Your computer uses flash BIOS, which can be updated through a program on a flash diskette so that you do not have to replace the BIOS chip to update the BIOS. This update will take 2MB of space on your hard disk drive (C:). Note: Make note of any settings you have changed in the BIOS Configuration Utility. These settings may have to be re-entered after updating the BIOS. Print this file so that you can refer to it during the installation. Downloading the update ---------------------- 1. Click the file link to download the file from the web page. 2. When prompted, select a drive and directory in which to save the downloaded file. Extracting the update --------------------- Installing this update involves creating a BIOS flash diskette and running the flash program from the diskette. Before you begin, have a blank 1.44 MB diskette ready. 1. Click Start, select Find or Search, then click Files and Folders. 2. Insert a blank 1.44MB floppy diskette into the diskette drive. 3. Type 21jt19a.exe in the search field, then click Find Now. This will locate the 21jt19a.exe file you just downloaded. 4. Double-click the icon for 21jt19a.exe. 5. Follow the onscreen prompts. The necessary files will be extracted to the diskette. Installing the update --------------------- 1. Close all open applications. 2. Leave the diskette in the A: drive, and shut down and restart the computer to start the BIOS flash program. You are prompted to select your country. 3. Select your country, then press Enter. The serial number is displayed and you are asked if you would like to update the serial number. 4. Press N. The machine type/model number is displayed. You are asked if you would like to update the model/type. 5. Press N. The current BIOS level is compared with that of the update. If the update is of a greater level than on your system, a message is displayed stating "THE POST/BIOS CODE IN THE SYSTEM IS THE SAME VERSION AS THAT ON THE DISKETTE. PRESS ENTER TO CONTINUE. PRESS ESC TO CANCEL." 6. Press Enter. 7. Once the Flash update is complete and you are prompted to do so, remove the diskette and press enter to reboot the system. WARNING: Do not under any circumstance power off or restart the system during the Flash update procedure. Doing so will critically damage your system. Testing for successful installation ----------------------------------- To verify that the BIOS update was successful, do the following: 1. Click Start, select Programs, select Access IBM, then click IBM System Information. If IBM System Information is not installed on your system, install it using your Software Selections CD. 2. Verify that the BIOS version is IBM BIOS ver 21KT19.0. Flash Changes ------------- 21JTxxA is the flash diskette level. 21KTxxA is the binary image level. (BIOS) NOTE: All changes carry forward. That is, if a change is added in 01, it is also in 02, 03 etc. CHANGES for 21KTxxA/21JTxxA 21KT15A/PIJT15A - Initial Release 21KT16A/PIJT16A - Updating memory settings. - ACPI change to enable keyboardless manufacturing. 21KT17A/PIJT17A - Correct slow boot times with USB keyboards/mice attached. 21KT18A/PIJT18A - Bios setup displays wrong processor speeds for certain processors. - Certain UDMA hard files not set up properly returning from standby. - Shorten time to return from standby (S3 state). - Update processor patch files. 21KT19A/PIJT19A - System hangs when booting from USB floppy drive - Slave hard disk on primary IDE interface has wrong capacity shown in BIOS Setup information.
