DOS update for Maxtor IDE hard disk drives
Installation README

A new update is available for Maxtor IDE hard drives.  This 
update has been developed to improve hard drive stability.  
It is part of IBM's ongoing commitment to improve hard drive 
quality.

The update only applies to IBM systems that come preinstalled 
with Maxtor IDE hard disk drives with model number 6E0xxL1.  The 
drives have the following information:

The update program will only update drives that are installed 
as Primary Master and will only update the Maxtor IDE 
hard drives with the information listed above.  The utility 
will report "Your drive has been successfully updated" when 
the update occurs.  It will report "Your drive does not 
require the update" when a non Maxtor drive is installed.

NOTE: Do not power off or restart your system While the 
      update is being implemented.  Doing so might cause 
      permanent damage to your hard drive.

      In addition, make sure you back up the data in your hard 
      drive prior to running the update.

Print this file so that you can refer to it during the installation.


Downloading the update
----------------------
1. Click the file link to download the file from the Web page.
2. When prompted, select a drive and directory in which to save
   the downloaded file.


Extracting the update
---------------------
Installing this update involves creating a bootable diskette.
Before you begin, have a blank 1.44 MB diskette ready.

1. Click Start, select Find or Search, then click Files and Folders.
2. Insert a blank 1.44MB floppy diskette into the diskette drive.
3. Type pz1t17a.exe in the search field, then click Find Now. This
   will locate the pz1t17a.exe file you just downloaded.
4. Double-click the pz1t17a.exe icon.
5. Follow the onscreen prompts. The necessary files will be
   extracted to the diskette.


Installing the update
---------------------
1. Close all open applications.
2. Leave the diskette in the A: drive, and shut down and restart
   the computer to start the update program.
3. Follow the onscreen instructions. 

The following onscreen message will be shown depending on the 
type of drive you have installed: 

"Your drive has been successfully updated" 

  - OR -

"Your drive does not require the update"

4. When finished, you will be taken to a DOS prompt. 
5. Remove the diskette, and reboot the system.
