This firmware update has been developed to improve hard drive stability and the SMART offline data collection process. It is part of our ongoing commitment to improve hard drive quality. To assist in updating the firmware, the update program will search for every hard drive connected to the system (Primary Master, Primary Slave, Secondary Master, Secondary Slave), and will install the new firmware on every IBM Deskstar Hard Drive that requires it. NOTE: Do not power off or restart your system While the Firmware of your hard drive is being updated. Doing so might cause permanent damage to your hard drive. In addition, make sure you back up the data in your hard drive prior to starting the firmware update. Print this file so that you can refer to it during the installation. About the extraction process ---------------------------- During the extraction process, you will be presented with some screen messages for DFT, including a license agreement. Read through the license agreement and click on the YES button to accept the terms. The Firmware update will not be extracted unless you accept the terms contained in the license agreement. Before Setup finishes creating the first floppy disk, you will be asked to select the country location and keyboard layout. Please select your country location and keyboard layout, then click on NEXT to finish creating the first disk. When the second diskette is created, you will be prompted to restart the computer.Select option: NO, I WILL RESTART MY COMPUTER LATER, and click on FINISH. Then follow the procedure explained below and the instructions presented by the firmware update program. Downloading the update ---------------------- 1. Click the file link to download the file from the Web page. 2. When prompted, select a drive and directory in which to save the downloaded file. Extracting the update --------------------- 1. Click Start, select Find or Search, then click Files and folders. 2. Type pz2z16us.exe in the search field, then click Find Now. This will locate the pz2z16us.exe file you just downloaded. 3. Double-click the pz2z16us.exe icon. 4. Click Next. Read the license agreement. 5. Click I accept the terms in the license agreement. 6. Click Next. Ensure that "Save files in folder" is set to C:\IBMTOOLS\DRIVERS\PZ2Z16US. 7. Click Next. 8. Follow the onscreen prompts to create the 2 needed diskettes. 9. When prompted, insert the first floppy disk and click on the NEXT button. Remember to label this disk as "DFT Bootable". 10. Once the first disk is created, you will be asked to insert a second floppy disk to create a Data Disk. Insert the second disk and click on the OK button to continue. When done, label the second disk as "DFT Disk No 2". Updating the firmware --------------------- Please follow the instructions provided below to update the firmware of your IBM Deskstar hard drive. Note: The firmware update program has mouse support enabled, so that you can use the mouse to click on any of the options presented to have the update process started. 1. With your system powered off, insert the disk labeled DFT Bootable, then turn on your system. If your system is powered on, you can use one of the following options: o If you are running Windows, turn the system off by following the shutdown process employed by windows, or o Press the power button until the system turns itself off (this option is not recommended if running windows, but can be used if running DOS), or o Press keys to restart the system. In order to use this option, make sure that you have already inserted the disk labeled DFT bootable in the system. (This option is not recommended if running windows, but can be used if running DOS). 2. Your system will start loading the firmware update program, then it will ask you to insert the second diskette. At this time, insert disk labeled DFT Disk No 2 and press any key to continue. 3. You will be presented with a license agreement. Read through it and click on the I AGREE button. 4. The firmware update program will start searching for all IBM hard drives connected to the system. When the search is completed, a message will be shown at the top of the screen to inform you about the results (this section is named INFORMATION). There are two possible messages that can be shown, depending on the results: o If no IBM Deskstar hard drives are found or if the IBM drive does not require the update: Your drive(s) does not require a firmware update. Please press the EXIT button to terminate the program. o If IBM Deskstar hard drives that require the update are found: At least one of your drives can be updated to a newer firmware level. To start the update, please press the UPDATE Firmware button. 5. If one or more of your hard drives require a firmware update, press the UPDATE FIRMWARE button as specified by the program, and follow the instructions that will be presented to you thereafter. If no update is required, just press the EXIT button to terminate the program. 6. In addition to the above message, you will also see a list of all the drives that require the update. This list can be found under the section named DEVICE LIST. 7. Once the firmware is installed in all drives that required it, the program will show you the following message: Your drive(s) does not require a firmware update. Please press the EXIT button to terminate DTF. This occurs because after installing the firmware, another search is quickly done to make sure that all drives have received the update. If all drives have it, you will see the above message. 8. Now that all IBM Deskstar hard drives in your system have been updated, press the EXIT button to terminate the program. 9. Once you see this message, remove the floppy disk from your system and turn it off by pressing the power button, then turn it back on. If you prefer not to use the power button, you can press the keys to restart the system. Now your system will start booting and you can use it as usual.
