128mb_key_boot.txt This document briefly describes how to make your IBM 128 MB USB 2.0 Memory Key p/n 22P8998, FRU 22P8999 bootable. Key requirements ---------------- 1. Ensure that your computer (Desktop / laptop / potentially server) is able to boot from an USB device. You can check this either in the BIOS of your computer or with the documentation of your computer or with help line of your computer manufacturer. 2. Check the serial number that is printed on your IBM 128 MB USB 2.0 memory key. a) If the serial number is 2408000 or lower: Please download and use memkeyboot_v0_0.exe b) If the serial number is 2408001 or higher: Please download and use memkeyboot_v1_1.exe Downloading the software ------------------------ 1. Click the file link to download the file from the Web page. 2. When prompted, select a drive and directory in which to save the download file. Running the software -------------------- 1. Insert only one IBM 128 MB USB 2.0 Memory Key into a USB slot of your computer and wait for the system to recognize it. 2. Once your system has recognized your IBM 128 MB USB 2.0 Memory Key double click on the My Computer icon and then double click on the hard disk icon representing the USB Memory Key - it is usually displayed as "Removable Disk". Run the Program Partition(.exe) and ensure that Protected area is set to 0 MB and public area to the maximum value. 3. Click Start, highlight Find, then click Files and folders. 4. Type memkeyboot*.* in the search box, then click Find Now. This will display either memkeyboot_v0_0.exe or memkeyboot_v1_1.exe or both depending on which file(s) you have downloaded. 5. WARNING: This step will format your memory key and make it bootable! All data on it will be lost! Depending on the serial number of your IBM 128 MB USB 2.0 Memory key launch the according memkeyboot program. a) If the serial number of the Memory Key is 2408000 or lower: Run memkeyboot_v0_0.exe b) If the serial number of the Memory Key is 2408001 or higher: Run memkeyboot_v1_1.exe After this program has completed successfully you will see an according message onscreen. 6. Shutdown your system and turn it off. 7. Refer to your computer documentation on how to access the BIOS settings. Follow the given instructions and change boot sequence settings in such a way that you can boot off the IBM 128 MB USB 2.0 Memory Key. This requires that you turn your computer back on. Recommended BIOS settings are: a) Legacy Floppy drive (3.5" diskette drive). Note: Only for computers and mobile computers with 3.5" diskette drives. b) ATAPI CD-ROM drive or other optical drive, such as DVD. c) Hard Drive # or USB Device (Memory Key) Note: In desktop systems, for example, this may be "Hard Drive 1" d) Hard Drive - primary hard drive that contains operating system or data files. (usually "Hard Drive 0") Save the settings and exit from the BIOS. 8. After you turn your system on or reboot it should now boot off the IBM 128 MB USB 2.0 Memory Key.
