With IBM PCI Hot Plug, you can use: o Hot Add to install and configure a new adapter while the server is running o Hot Swap to replace a faulty standalone or redundant adapter while the system is running o The IBM PCI Hot Plug Applet to monitor the status of Hot Plug PCI slots on your server IBM PCI Hot Plug includes two wizards, IBM PCI Hot Plug and Play and IBM PCI Hot Swap. These wizards provide clear, step-by-step guidance while you are adding or swapping an adapter. The IBM Fault Tolerant Manager Interface (FTMI) for Windows NT 4.0 allows you to manage the failover operation on Hot Plug-compatible servers. It provides an integrated view of network machines that require failover management. With FTMI, you can: o Monitor the status of every Fault Tolerant group on the network. o Force a failover remotely from an active adapter to its backup. o Replace a faulty standalone or redundant adapter while the system is running using Hot Swap o Monitor the status of Hot Plug PCI slots on Hot Plug-compatible servers on the network. IBM Fault Tolerant Manager Interface includes the IBM PCI Hot Swap wizard. This wizard provides clear, step-by-step guidance while you are swapping an adapter. 2.0 Change History ---------------------------- 2.1 Changes from version 1.0 to 2.0 The new version 2.0 provides the following new support: o Support for the IBM Netfinity 7000 M10 o IBM Token Ring 2 (Hot Add) 2.2 Changes from version 2.0 to 3.0 The new version 3.0 provides the following new support: o Fault Tolerant Management Interface 2.3 Changes from version 3.0 to 3.1 The new version 3.1 provides the following new support: o 66 Bus Speed mismatch detection for IBM Netfinity 8500R o Support for the IBM Netfinity 8500R o Support for the IBM Netfinity 5600 2.4 Changes from version 3.1 to 4.0 The new version 4.0 provides the following new support: o Support for the IBM Netfinity 5500 M20, 7000 M10, 8500R, 5600 and 7600 o Support for IBM Netfinity 10/100 Ethernet o Support for Alteon Gigabit Adapter (710012) 2.5 Changes from version 4.0 to 4.1 The new version 4.1 provides the following new support: o Support for the IBM Netfinity 6000R o Support for Microsoft Service Pack 6a 2.6 Changes from version 4.1 to 4.2 The new version 4.2 provides the following new support: o Support for IBM ServeRAID 4M, 4L, 4Mx and 4Lx o Better FTMI and Hot Swap usability 2.7 Changes from version 4.2 to 5.0 The new version 5.0 provides the following new support: o Support for IBM eServer xSeries 360 and IBM I/O Expansion Drawer o Support for IBM eServer xSeries 255 3.0 Installation and Setup Instructions ----------------------------------------- You must use the following software to provide IBM PCI Hot Plug and Fault Tolerant Management support for hot plug-capable IBM Netfinity/eServer systems. You can download this software from www.ibm.com/pc/support/netfinity. o Intel DMI Agent o IBM PCI Hot Plug Services and Fault Tolerant Management Interface o IBM Fault Tolerant Device Drivers You can install the same components on a non Hot Plug systems in order to support the following: o Monitor the status of every Fault Tolerant group on the network. o Force a failover remotely from an active adapter to its backup. o Monitor the status of Hot Plug PCI slots on Hot Plug- compatible servers on the network. 3.1 Installing Intel DMI agent -------------------------------- This software will install DMI version 2.0 on your system. You must install the DMI agent before you can install the IBM PCI Hot Plug Services. There is a Y2K update for this DMI product. Please see WEB site listed in section 6 below for more information. If DMI is already installed on your system, goto Step 2. 1. Download the DMI Agent exe file from the Netfinity/eServer Support web page and extract the files onto a diskette. 2. Insert the diskette into the floppy drive. 3. From the Start menu, select Run. 4. Type A:\SETUP in the Open box. 5. Click OK. The Setup wizard opens. 6. Check both "DMI 2.0 Service Provider" and "DMI 2.0 DCE Client" items. 7. Follow the instructions on the setup wizard until the program is installed. 8. Reboot 3.2 Installing IBM PCI Hot Plug Services and Fault Tolerant Management Interface (FTMI) ------------------------------------------------ 1. Download the IBM PCI Hot Plug Services and Fault Tolerant Management Interface exe file from the Netfinity/eServer Support web page and extract the files onto a diskette. 2. Log in to Windows NT as a user in the Administrator group. 3. Insert the diskette into the floppy drive. 4. From the Start menu, Select Run. 5. Type A:\SETUP.EXE in the Open box. 6. Click OK. The Setup wizard opens. 7. Follow the instructions on the setup wizard until the program is installed. NOTES: If you have an older version of IBM PCI Hot Plug Services and Fault Tolerant Management interface on your system a message box will prompt you to upgrade. Click Yes and the Setup Wizard will guide you through the rest of the installation. 3.3 Installing Hot Plug Adapters Software -------------------------------------------- Please read the adapter's user manual for specific Hot Plug and Faut Tolerant support. To insure that any of the Hot Plug features work properly, you must install the Hot Plug aware drivers. If you already have an adapter configured on your system make sure that the drivers are Hot Plug aware. In the case of an old version of the driver, those must be removed and replaced with the latest. A reboot will be required. 1. Download the driver .exe file from the web page and extract the files onto a diskette. 2. Place the diskette into the floppy drive. 3. Proceed with the normal upgrade of the adapter drivers. See your Windows NT documentation for information about upgrading drivers. 4. Reboot 3.4 Tips to Know before using PCI Hot Plug features ----------------------------------------------- 1. Hot Plug Aware Drivers To insure that any of the Hot Plug features work properly, you must install the Hot Plug aware drivers. If you already have an adapter configured on your system make sure that the drivers are Hot Plug aware. In the case of an old version of the driver, those must be removed and replaced with the latest. A reboot will be required. 2. Hot Add of an Adapter previously removed When an administrator attempts to Hot-Add a SCSI or RAID adapter on a Hot Plug system on which the adapter has already been installed and removed, the Hot Add will fail. 3. The administrator is strongly advised to mark all SCSI drivers which have no device as "DISABLED" via the Devices Control Applet. This will prevent the driver from being started and allow the Hot Add to proceed normally. The Hot Plug Wizard may display something like the following error : " Registry Access Failure : location 3 error 2 " 4. MAC address incorrect (all zeros) for Hot Added card After a Hot Add of an NIC Card, the MAC addresses are being returned as all zeros (000000000000).This does not affect the abilities of the adapter. 5. Hot Remove This feature is NOT supported. 6. Best Time to perform PCI Hot Plug action It is highly recommended to perform any of the PCI Hot Plug features during low traffic. 7. Reboot Message After Hot Adding an adapter, the Windows NT applications (Network Applet and SCSI Applet) will ask the user to Reboot. DO NOT REBOOT! 8. Event Log Message " CreateFile failed to \\\\.\\pipe\\hotsrv " Event ID: 1007 Source: ipssvc Type: error Category : none This behavior is logged in the Event Viewer as a step to trace events. The Hot Swap wizard may log such error if the system is unable to fulfill the request at the time. Since the Hot Swap wizard retries 5 times before giving up. If the Hot Swap worked correctly, you can ignore this message. 9. Fault Tolerant Management Interface Limitations o When managing a server remotely, there may be a few minutes where DMI events on a remotely managed machine could be missed by the FTMI service on the managing machine. o Under heavy stress, FTMI may take up to several minutes to refresh adapters status. 10. DHCP will only bind to the first NIC adapter in an NT system. While Hot Adding an adapter in a DHCP server, clients attached to that Hot Added NIC will not receive an IP address from the DHCP. 11. It is not recommended to add two stand alone NIC adapters connected to the same network. 12. Hot Adding Two IBM PCI Token Ring 2 Adapters When Hot Adding two IBM PCI Token Ring II cards into the same PCI bus, the Hot Plug service may enter two warnings into the event log: IBM PCI Hot Plug Services: An active unclaimed PCI resource will be deactivated: Bus 1, DeviceNumber 1, BAR[2] = F7FFF000 value. IBM PCI Hot Plug Services: An active unclaimed PCI resource will be deactivated: Bus 1, DeviceNumber 1, BAR[1] = F7FFFF00 value. These warnings are expected. The cards do not use these resources. 13. ServeRAID on Netfinity 8500 Do Not Hot Add a ServeRAID adapter in slots 10, 11 and 12. o Windows NT will look for a boot device on that ServeRAID card and fail to boot from the onboard drive. o Hot Adding this adapter also while the default is NT VGA mode will make the system unusable and will require a reboot. 14. IBM Netfinity 10/100 Ethernet To ensure the Hot Add feature works properly when an IBM Netfinity 10/100 ethernet adapter is present in the system, it needs to be fully configured with the driver version later than 3.7 [ IBMFENT.SYS 4.02.25.0000 ]. Failing to do so may end in a Blue Screen. 15. Uninstalled Adapters To insure that any of the Hot Plug features work properly, there must not be any uninstalled adapters located in the PCI bus prior to the Hot Add. Install and configure the device driver for each PCI adapter, or remove the adapter from the system before continuing. Failing to do so may end in a Blue Screen. 16. Hot Adding IBM PCI Token Ring Adapters and Netfinity 8500 Once an IBM PCI Token Ring Adapter has been Hot Added into Bus A (slots 10, 11 or 12), no other adapters should be Hot Added into Bus A due to a resource limitation with the onboard S3 Video driver. 17. Hot Swap of Active ServeRAID Adapter in a Paired Configuration If a Hot Swap of the Active adapter in a ServeRAID Paired Configuration is performed from FTMI (Fault Tolerant Management Interface), after the Hot Swap has completed, the FTMI window must be manually Refreshed in order to display the updated status of the ServeRAID Pair. This can be performed via selecting the Exclamation Button (Refresh View) or by selecting Refresh from the View drop-down Menu. 18. Stand-Alone Hot Swap with ServeRAID If a ServeRAID adapter is installed in a system before the IBM Hot Plug PCI System Support Program software is installed, a reboot will be required after the software installation to allow the existing ServeRAID driver to support a stand-alone Hot Swap. 19.
