***************************************************************** IBM (R) Active (TM) PCI Manager Readme.txt Version 3.1.1 ***************************************************************** CONTENTS --------- 1.0 Overview 2.0 Change History 3.0 Installation Issues 4.0 Configuration Information 5.0 Unattended Mode 6.0 Web Sites and Support Phone Number 7.0 Trademarks and Notices 1.0 OVERVIEW: This setup program will install the IBM Active PCI Manager software to work with IBM Director. 1.1 Features IBM Active PCI Manager is a plug in for IBM Director to help administrators manage PCI and PCI-X adapters in supported systems, Active PCI Manager offers the following tools: o A graphical user interface representing information on how the PCI / PCI-X buses and slots are arranged in the system and any I/O expansion drawers. o An Analyze function that compares all PCI and PCI-X adapters in a system to see if they are forcing other PCI or PCI-X adapters, or they are themselves being forced by other PCI or PCI-X adapters, to operate in a less than maximum state. The result is to identify a solution that would eliminate or lessen the need for adapters to run in a PCI backwards-compatibility mode. o An Add Card Wizard that works with the Analyze function to determine the most suitable slot in which to insert a new adapter. 1.2 Limitations o Print functions do not work as expected when using the Generic / Text Only Printer driver o Changing the PCI Bus speed requires a system reboot o PCI adapters that are located in PCI slots that support 5 volts, will be skipped (locked) by the analyze function. Reason: Adapter voltage support is identified physically at the slot connector. Note: PCI-X adapters located in 5 volt slots do not have this limitation because all PCI-X adapters support 3.3 volt. 2.0 CHANGE HISTORY ------------------ o Version 3.1.1 - IBM eServer xSeries (TM) 345 support added - IBM eServer xSeries 235 support added - Improved Add Card Wizard - Improved Result Dialog - Added Print Configuration feature o Version 1.1 - IBM eServer xSeries 255 support added - Optimization of 133 PCI-X cards improved o Version 1.0 Initial Release April 2002 3.0 INSTALLATION ISSUES ----------------------- 3.1 Administrator privileges required to run setup If you are logged on as a user that does not have at least local Administrator privileges, setup could display a dialog box with the following message: "The InstallShield engine (ikernel.exe) could not be launched. Class not registered." If setup displays this dialog box, you will need to log off and log back on with an account that has at least local Administrator privileges. 3.2 Uninstall IBM Director before IBM Active PCI Manager If you uninstall IBM Director before you uninstall IBM Active PCI Manager, setup will display a dialog that displays the following message: "Self Registration Error The following files did not self-register or unregister: 1. C:\Program Files\Active PCI Manager\foxprox.dll the specified module could not be found. to continue, Click OK; otherwise Click Cancel." If you need to uninstall IBM Director, you will need to uninstall IBM Active PCI Manager first. 3.3 Do not modify installation manually. If you copy one of the files installed by the IBM Active PCI Manager installation program over a different installation and then try to modify the second installation with setup.exe, setup.exe will display a dialog box that says it can not find the Setup.ini file and asks you to insert the disk with Setup.ini. If this happens you will need to 'Remove' the current installation with setup.exe and reinstall it. Do not attempt to modify an IBM Active PCI Manager installation manually, always use setup.exe to make changes. 3.4 Version 3.1.1 is not backward compatible. Version 3.1.1 improvements are not backwards compatible with the Version 1.1 or Version 1.0 of the software. If you are running console Version 1.0 you will need to manually verify that the server and agent components are also all Version 1.0. If you are running console Version 1.1 or above, one of the following error messages will occur if the IBM Active PCI Manager version does not match on the console, server or agent. o Result page: "An error occurred while running the analyzer: The version of the software on the server does not match the version of the software on the console. Please install the same version of the software on the console, server and agent." o When starting the Task from the IBM Director task pane: "The version of the software on the agent does not match the version of the software on the console. Please install the same version of the software on the console, server and agent." To correct this, install the same version of the IBM Active PCI Manager on the IBM Director console, server and agent. 3.5 It is not safe to manually stop or start the services that setup will stop and start. This includes, but is not limited to, using the net command in a DOS command line window and using Services in the Computer Management app to start or stop services. This also applies to stopping a service, running setup then re-starting the service after installation completes. Doing so can cause unpredictable installation errors, abnormal operation of IBM Director and IBM Active PCI Manager to become unavailable. 4.0 CONFIGURATION INFORMATION ----------------------------- 4.1 Systems Requirements IBM eServer xSeries 440 Ship level BIOS or later IBM eServer xSeries 360 BIOS 40 or later IBM eServer xSeries 345 Ship level BIOS or later IBM eServer xSeries 255 Ship level BIOS or later IBM eServer xSeries 235 Ship level BIOS or later 4.2 Software Requirements o Microsoft (R) Windows (R) 2000 Server Service Pack 2 o Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server Service Pack 2 o Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 o IBM Active PCI Software Version 5.0.2.0 or later 4.3 Hardware Supported o IBM Director Console IBM Director supported system using: - Windows 2000 Professional - Windows 2000 Server - Windows 2000 Adv.
