INSTALLING 9FX REALITY 334 DRIVERS AND HAWKEYE FOR WINDOWS NT 4.0 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Installing the NT 4.0 driver and Hawkeye utility is currently a two step process. The first step installs the driver and the second step installs the Hawkeye utility. These two steps will be combined into a single step install for the final release of the driver. Note: If your computer has IBM-preinstalled software, the video device driver for Windows NT 4.0 has already been installed on the hard disk of your computer. However, the information included in this file will be helpful if you ever need to reinstall or update the device driver, or if you want to change the video settings. ----------------------------------------------------------- A) INSTALLING THE 9FX REALITY 334 VIDEO DEVICE DRIVER ----------------------------------------------------------- 1. Start Windows NT 4.0 in VGA mode: When the "Please select the operating system to start..." message is displayed, select WINDOWS NT WORKSTATION VERSION 4.00 [VGA MODE]. 2. After Windows NT 4.0 has finished starting, click on the START button, select SETTINGS, and then click on CONTROL PANEL. 3. Double-click on the DISPLAY icon. The Display Properties window appears. Note: You can also display the Display Properties window by clicking the right mouse button anywhere on the Desktop and then selecting the PROPERTIES option from the pop-up menu. 4. Click on the SETTINGS tab. 5. Click on the DISPLAY TYPE button. The Display Type window appears. 6. Under Adapter Type, click on the CHANGE button. 7. In the Change Display window, click on the HAVE DISK button. 8. Insert the 9FX Reality 334 driver for Windows NT 4.0 diskette 1 into drive A; then click on the OK button. Or, if you have copied the driver files to a directory on your harddrive or to a network drive, enter the correct path and click on the OK button. NOTE: Do NOT store the driver files in a directory called C:\NUMBER9 as it will create a conflict with the configuration file of the same name! 9. From the list of displayed S3 devices, select the 'Reality 334' device; then click on the OK button. 10. In the Third-party Drivers window, click on the YES button to proceed. o If a message appears stating the driver is already installed on the system, and asks if you want to use the current or new drivers, be sure to select the NEW button. 11. When the message "The drivers were successfully installed" is displayed, remove the driver diskette from the drive; then click on the OK button. 12. In the Display Type window, click on the CLOSE button. 13. In the Display Properties window, click on the CLOSE or APPLY button. 14. When the System Settings Change window appears with a message asking if you want to restart your computer, click on YES. NOTE: The first time NT 4.0 is restarted after the 9FX Reality 334 driver has been installed, an 'Invalid Display Settings' message box will appear stating that 'A new graphics driver has been installed'. Press OK on the message box and OK on the Display Properties window and then continue with the installation of Hawkeye below. ----------------------------------------------------------- B) INSTALLING THE HAWKEYE FOR WINDOWS NT 4.0 FEATURE SET ----------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: Before installing the HawkEye for Windows NT 4.0 feature set, please close all open application programs and disable any anti-virus software that is running on your computer until the HawkEye for Windows NT 4.0 installation is complete! NOTE: If you copy the driver files to a directory on your local harddrive, do NOT store the driver files in a directory called C:\NUMBER9 as it will create a conflict with the configuration file of the same name! Installing the Hawkeye software is a one step procedure. Simply run the file 'SETUP.EXE' on driver diskette 1 or from the harddrive directory where the driver files are stored. 1. Insert the 9FX Reality 334 driver for Windows NT 4.0 diskette 1 into drive A. Or, if you have copied the driver files to a directory on your harddrive or to a network drive, proceed directly to step 2. 2. From Windows NT 4.0, click on the Windows NT 4.0 START button. 3. Select RUN... 4. Run SETUP from the drive A or from the directory on your local harddrive, network drive, or CDROM that contains the 9FX Reality 334 video driver. For example, if your CDROM is drive D: and the drivers are located in a directory called NT40, then you would type: D:\NT40\SETUP. If you're not sure exactly where the drivers are, use the BROWSE option on the RUN... window to locate the 9FX Reality 334 SETUP program. SETUP.EXE will perform the HawkEye for Windows NT 4.0 installation for you. Follow the on-screen instructions when SETUP.EXE is run until the installation is complete. When the installtion is finished, remove the the diskette from drive A if once was used. If prompted, you must restart Windows NT 4.0 to complete the installation of your new HawkEye for Windows NT 4.0 features. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. CHANGING THE MONITOR SELECTION OR DISPLAY REFRESH RATE ------------------------------------------------------------------ To change the monitor refresh rate: 1. Start Windows NT 4.0. 2. With the left mouse button, double click on the Number 9 icon in the right corner of the Windows NT 4.0 taskbar. 3. Click on the 'Monitor Selection' tab. 4. If your monitor supports DDC (Plug and Play) and you want the drivers to automatically decode the monitor's DDC information when NT 4.0 is booted, click on the 'Autodetect DDC monitor on restart' box. 5. If your monitor does not support DDC or you want to override the DDC information provided by the monitor: A) Be sure the 'Autodetect DDC monitor on restart' box is NOT checked. B) Select a new IBM monitor with the pulldown menu and either the mouse or the up and down arrow keys. 6. Click on the 'OK' or 'Apply' button. 7. If prompted, click on the 'Continue' button to test the new monitor setting. If the test screen appears garbled or unreadable, your monitor does not support the current setting. Either select another IBM monitor or go to the 'Display Properties' and 'Settings' window to manually select an alternate refresh rate. The Display Properties window can be accessed by clicking the right mouse button anywhere on the Desktop and then selecting the PROPERTIES option from the pop-up menu. 8. If the test screen appeared OK, press 'Yes' to keep the current monitor setting. Then press 'OK' to close the HawkEye utility. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. CHANGING THE VIDEO SETTINGS ------------------------------------------------------------------ To change the video settings: 1. Start Windows NT 4.0. 2. With the left mouse button, double click on the Number 9 icon in the right corner of the Windows NT 4.0 taskbar. 3. Click on the 'Resolution Exchange' tab. 4. Select the desired resolution and color depth. 5. Click on the 'OK' or 'Apply' button. NOTE: The NT 4.0 9FX Reality 334 video driver supports dual monitors when 2 9FX Reality 334 adapters are installed in the system. The adapters can be placed either on the AGP or PCI bus. When two adapters are installed, additional 'Virtual Desktop' resolutions will be available in the 'Resolution Exchange' window which will stretch the desktop across the two monitors. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. REMOVING THE 9FX REALITY 334 DRIVERS AND HAWKEYE ------------------------------------------------------------------ To remove the 9FX Reality 334 drivers and Hawkeye utility: 1. After Windows NT 4.0 has finished starting, click on the START button, select SETTINGS, and then click on CONTROL PANEL. 3. Double-click on the DISPLAY icon. The Display Properties window appears. Note: You can also display the Display Properties window by clicking the right mouse button anywhere on the Desktop and then selecting the PROPERTIES option from the pop-up menu. 4. Click on the SETTINGS tab. 5. Click on the DISPLAY TYPE button. The Display Type window appears. 6. Under Adapter Type, click on the CHANGE button. 7. In the Change Display window, select '(Standard display types)' under 'Manufacturers:' and 'VGA compatible display adapter' under 'Display:'. 8. Click on the OK button. 9. Insert the NT 4.0 installation CD ROM if prompted. 10. When the message "The drivers were successfully installed" is displayed, click on the OK button. 10. In the Display Type window, click on the CLOSE button. 11. In the Display Properties window, click on the CLOSE button. 12. When the System Settings Change window appears with a message asking if you want to restart your computer, click on YES. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. TROUBLESHOOTING HAWKEYE FOR WINDOWS NT 4.0 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Problem: 1) The 9FX Reality 334 driver and Hawkeye cannot be installed in one step by running SETUP.EXE. Solution: This will be fixed in a future release of the driver. * * * ------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. DIRECT DRAW, DCI AND VIDEO FOR WINDOWS ------------------------------------------------------------------ DCI support is now incorporated into 'Direct Draw' for Windows NT 4.0 Direct Draw requires files that are not included with the 9FX Reality 334 product. The required files will be included with your Direct Draw Application. Installing your Direct Draw application or game will install these files. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. OTHER PROBLEMS ------------------------------------------------------------------ Software sometimes does not perform consistently across all resolutions and color depths. If you experience a persistent problem for which you cannot determine a cause or solution, try switching to a different resolution with Resolution Exchange. If the problem is consistent across resolutions. Please consult application documentation. Most applications are distributed with a READ_ME file similar to this file. READ_ME files usually contain a wealth of information regarding potential video conflicts. If you have a problem that is not described in this file or is unresolved when you try the suggested solutions, please contact the IBM HelpDesk or check to see if there are any driver updates available. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 9.
