Insert the "IBM ServeRAID-7e (Adaptec HostRAID) Support" CD into the CD-ROM drive; then, turn on the server. 2. The ServeRAID Manager program will start. You will see an Express/Custom choice on the screen. Choose Express to automatically create your logical drives. Choose Custom to manually create your logical drives. 3.2 Installing or updating the device driver _____________________________________________ NOTE: When upgrading a Linux installation with a package that includes device drivers (such as a kernel upgrade), always re-install the latest version of the HostRAID Linux device driver before rebooting your system. Install the HostRAID device drivers that are provided on the "IBM ServeRAID-7e (Adaptec HostRAID) Support" CD. Refer to the IBM ServeRAID and Adaptec HostRAID Device Driver Installation Instructions (DEVDRV.PDF) in the /BOOKS directory on the "IBM ServeRAID-7e (Adaptec HostRAID) Support" CD. o To install the device driver for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 Quarterly Update 2, follow these steps: NOTE: This procedure solves a known problem with the driver disk images provided with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 Quarterly Update 2. The Default Driver Disk image file is very large. During installation, most of the system disk space will be used by the default driver images on the CD and the installer will not have enough space to copy third-party driver images. As a work-around, Red Hat suggests booting from the boot floppy, which uses a smaller driver disk image file. 1. Create a boot diskette from the "boot.img" file in the "images" directory in CD1 of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 QU2 (Quarterly Update 2). Label the diskette "rh21 boot diskette". To create the diskette from the ".img" file on a Linux system, type: # dd if=./boot.img of=/dev/fd0 bs=18k 2. Boot the system from the "rh21 boot diskette". When you see the Linux "boot" prompt, type: #boot: linux dd NOTE: Be sure there is no CD in the CD-ROM drive. 3. When you are prompted for a driver diskette, remove the "rh21 boot diskette" from the floppy drive; then, insert the HostRAID driver diskette. Also, insert the Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 2.1 QU2 CD 1 in the CD-ROM drive. Continue the installation and complete the steps to install the Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 2.1 operating system hard drive(s). o When you install the HostRAID SCSI driver for UnitedLinux 1.0 with Service Pack 3, you must select the "installation - fail safe" mode option from the installation menu. 3.3 Installing the ServeRAID Manager ____________________________________ Install the ServeRAID Manager program from the "IBM ServeRAID-7e (Adaptec HostRAID) Support" CD or from the IBM Support Web site. Refer to the IBM ServeRAID User's Reference (SRAID.PDF) in the /BOOKS directory on the "IBM ServeRAID-7e (Adaptec HostRAID) Support" CD for installation instructions. o Before you can install the ServeRAID Manager under Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 3, you must install two packages from Red Hat installation CD: - compat-libstdc++-7.3-2.96.122.i386.rpm - compat-libstdc++--devel-7.3-2.96.122.i386.rpm NOTE: The version string in the file name may be different than above; be sure to check the version string on the Red Hat CD. For example, type: rpm --install /mnt/compat-libstdc++-7.3-2.96.122.i386.rpm where mnt is the mount point of the CD-ROM drive. o To install the ServeRAID Manager from the World Wide Web, use the following instructions: 1. Download the Linux version of the ServeRAID Manager file into a temporary directory, such as /tmp. 2. Type: rpm --install /tmp/.rpm where /tmp is the directory used for the download in step 1 and is the name of the file you downloaded from the Web. 3. Press Enter. 3.4 Installing the HRCONF command-line program ________________________________________________ Install the HRCONF command-line program that is provided on the "IBM ServeRAID-7e (Adaptec HostRAID) Support" CD. Refer to the IBM ServeRAID User's Reference (SRAID.PDF) in the /BOOKS directory on the "IBM ServeRAID-7e (Adaptec HostRAID) Support" CD for installation instructions. 4.0 Troubleshooting tips ________________________ 4.1 General ____________ o When installing SuSE Linux 9.0 or SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 on a system with a USB keyboard and/or mouse, you must enter 'noapic acpi=off' in the boot parameters to complete the installation. o Under Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 3, you may see the following message when you install the ServeRAID Manger: "Failed dependencies: libstdc++--libc6.1-1.so.2 is needed by RaidMan -7.00-00" To successfully install the ServeRAID Manager, you must install two packages from the Red Hat installation CD. See section 3.3, Installing the ServeRAID Manager, for details. o If you rebuild the Linux kernel, the SCSI-generic support must be included or the ServeRAID Manager program will not work properly. o If you start a server with the "IBM ServeRAID-7e (Adaptec HostRAID) Support" CD in the CD-ROM drive, the following warning message might display: You passed an undefined mode number. Press to see video modes available, to continue or wait 30 secs Press the Spacebar to continue starting the "IBM ServeRAID-7e (Adaptec HostRAID) Support" CD. Then, the following message displays and the CD starts: Uncompressing Linux... Press the eject button on the CD-ROM drive. o If you are running DOS applications in protected mode, you must add the following lines to the CONFIG.SYS: device=x:\himem.sys device=x:\emm386.exe NOEMS where x is the drive where DOS is installed. o On a Netfinity server, if your operating system fails to start three times consecutively, the system BIOS will turn off the processor cache. When this happens the "IBM ServeRAID-7e (Adaptec HostRAID) Support" CD behaves unexpectedly. To correct the problem, enter the system BIOS and re-enable the processor cache (or load the default settings). Refer to your system documentation for instructions on entering the system BIOS. o When running the multiple processor kernel, Linux has a problem accessing controllers that are assigned IRQ 9 by the system BIOS. To correct this problem, enter the system BIOS and change the IRQ assigned to each controller. o The Caps Lock key is disabled when using the ServeRAID Manager program in startable-CD (bootable-CD) mode. 4.2 Compatibility issues _________________________ o Some SCSI drive models can time out when connected to the on-board SCSI 7901, such as the IBM-ESXS ST373307LC with firmware version B25E (73GB). 5.0 Web Sites and Support Phone Number _______________________________________ o You can download new and updated files for the IBM ServeRAID-7e (Adaptec HostRAID) products from the IBM Support Web site: http://www.ibm.com/pc/support/ o For the latest list of supported operating systems, see the IBM Server Proven - SCSI and RAID Controllers Web site: http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/compat/controllers/matrix.html o With the original purchase of an IBM hardware product, you have access to extensive support coverage.
