IBM 16/4 TOKEN RING PCI ADAPTER DRIVER 1 OF 2 README file for IBM LAN Client 2.20 for DOS/Windows 3.1x IBM LAN Client 2.20 for DOS/Windows 3.1x enables you to concurrently run multiple protocols with your IBM LAN Adapter without using up all your valuable DOS conventional or upper memory below 1 MB. ============================ SOME THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW: ============================ 1) Please read the enclosed LNCLIENT.TXT file for general information about IBM LAN Client 2.20, details on hardware and software requirements, information on running the installation programs, and troubleshooting tips. The LNCLIENT.TXT file is located in the \LNCLIENT subdirectory (unless you override the default) after you have used LANAID to install the IBM LAN Client. 2) IBM LAN Client has been tested with Attachmate's Extra for Windows ver 4.2. You must uncheck the box labeled "End with REQDISCONTACT (REQDISC)" or you might get a hang when unloading Extra. 3) If you are using Attachmate's Extra for DOS and you get EMM386 errors or machine lockup's, you need to remove the "noems" parameter from the EMM386.EXE in CONFIG.SYS. 4) If you are trying to login to a Novell server from DOS with Client-32 and you are prompted for a password when you don't normally use one or you enter your password and it is rejected, make sure you have at least 350K bytes of DOS real-mode memory for the Netware login program to run successfully. This problem will normally occur if you start other TSR applications before trying to login to the Novell server. 5) If you are running the IBM AntiVirus/DOS program, you must either not use the DOS shield or update to IBM AntiVirus/DOS version 2.5 or higher. 6) If you are running the IBM AnitVirus/DOS program CTL+ALT+DEL (soft reboots) will hang because of a known problem in IBMAV that traps the CTL ALT+DEL and doesn't pass it on to the IBM LAN Client software to do a proper shutdown of the adapter. You can type "UNLOAD IBMTRPO" from a DOS prompt before issuing the CTL+ALT+DEL to get around this problem. 7) If you are using EMM386.EXE without one of the following parameters: RAM or NOEMS or ALTBOOT you might get a hang on a soft reboot (CTL+ALT+DEL). 8) If you are using LAN Client to connect to NetWare Server Version 3.11, you must install a patch to insure your drive mappings will remain intact. Copy PATCHMAN.NLM and SHORTAFX.NLM from the LAN Client directory (\LNCLIENT by default) to the SYS:\SYSTEM directory of the 3.11 Server. Enter 'LOAD PATCHMAN' and 'LOAD SHORTAFX' to execute the patch. Add the load commands to AUTOEXEC.NCF to handle future server reboots. 9) IBM LAN Client 2.20 does not support Client Access/400 DOSE Client. 10) IBM LAN Client 2.20 does not support multiple LAN adapters in the same workstation. 11) IBM Lan Client 2.20 now includes DOS LAN Services 5.x. NEW REDIRECTOR CHOICES We now have a PROTECT MODE REDIR. It is similar in function to the FULL REDIR, but only takes 53K of Real memory. NOTE: You CANNOT use the Protect Mode Redirector with Windows. The BASIC, FULL, and VIRTUAL mode redirectors are the same as in DLS 4.0 REDIRECTOR REAL MEMORY USAGE BASIC Uses 49K FULL Uses 99K PREDIR Uses 53K (49k for PREDIR and 4K for the DOS16M stub) VIRTUAL Uses 0K PEER Uses 49K (This is smaller than DLS 4.0 PEER) 33K is PEER 4K is RTIME 8K is PSPRINT 4K is DOS16M stub ------- WHAT'S NEW IN DLS WINDOWS The icons from NETGUI have been added to the DLS Windows interface. WHAT'S NEW IN PEER While PEER was rewritten, it is functionally the same as in DLS 4.0 EXCEPT for User level security. Userid and passwords can be used. DLS PEER now has a NET.ACC file DLS PEER supports NET USER, NET ACCESS, and NET GROUP. POTENTIAL DLS 5.0 PROBLEM AREAS 1) Strange results from trying to run the Protect Mode Redir with Windows. 2) Strange results from trying to run DLS PEER with Windows 3) PEER problems if you do not remember to LOGON with USERID PASSWORD as a admin the first time you logon at the PEER. (Remember, DLS PEER has it's own NET.ACC and you have to define id's at the Peer. 12) If you are running Client32 on a very fast processor, you may have problems connecting to the file server on boot. You need to add a line to the STARTNET.BAT file which pauses the system and gives the driver ample time to finish loading. This new line should follow the last frame type loaded. Example: LOAD TOKEN FRAME=TOKEN-RING_SNAP CHOICE /t:y,5 The CHOICE command inserts a 5 second delay. For more information on the CHOICE command, type HELP CHOICE at the Dos prompt. 13) If you are using a PCI Token-Ring Adapter in an IBM 6599 or 6898 and experience any hangs, you should modify your STARTNET.BAT file. You should add the keyword NONSHARED=YES to every line which says LOAD IBMTRPO. Example: LOAD IBMTRPO TXBUFFERS=2 RXBUFFERS=4 DATARATE=M16 FRAME=TOKEN_RING should be changed to: LOAD IBMTRPO TXBUFFERS=2 RXBUFFERS=4 DATARATE=M16 FRAME=TOKEN_RING NONSHARED=YES 14) If you are installing a IBM PCI Token-Ring Adapter, you will see a Route Switch Client enable option on the 'Network Opts 2' panel. This parameter may be enabled ONLY when the TCP/IP protocol is also selected. Otherwise, leave it disabled. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -jlb- -------End of File-------
