The adapter is USB specification revision 1.1 compliant. The RS232 serial interface is supported by this adapter, and supports over 1 Mbps data transfer rates. 1.1 System requirements: 1. IBM PC 486DX 4-100 MHz or higher 2. Available USB port 3. Operating System :Windows 2000, Windows XP/2003, Linux 7.3, 8.0, or 9.0. 2.0 Change History -------------------- This is the first release to support the IBM UPS line of products. 3.0 Installation and Setup Instructions ----------------------------------------- 3.1 Installing the device driver for Microsoft Windows Operating System Users: 1. Download the Serial-to-USB adapter driver files (contained in ser2usbwin.zip) for Microsoft Windows from the IBM Support Web Site: http://www.ibm.com/pc/support 2. Extract the files to a folder, such as: C:\Ser2USB Windows drivers 3. Turn on the server and make sure that the USB port is working properly. 4. Connect the Serial to USB Adapter to the server USB port. Note: The “Found New Hardware Wizard” will run to assist you in setting up the new device. 5. Click Next to continue. 6. Windows 2000: Select Search for a suitable device driver for my device.(recommended) Windows XP/2003: Select Install the software automatically. 7. Click Next to continue. 8. Windows 2000: Select only from a specific location Windows XP/2003: The device driver is automatically detected and installed. 9. Click Next to continue. 10. Windows 2000: Select Browse. 11. Windows 2000: Navigate to the folder where the extracted files were stored. 12. Windows 2000: Select the desired file.(SERWPL.inf) 13. Windows 2000: Select OK. 14. Click Next to continue. 15. Click Finish. 16. To make sure that the device driver is installed correctly, click Control Panel=> System=> Hardware=> Device Manager. 17. Check that the Prolific USB to Serial Comm Port is under the Ports (Com & LPT) heading. 18. Record the port number assigned to the adapter. 3.2 Uninstalling the device driver for Microsoft Windows Operating System Users: 1. Disconnect the Serial to USB Adapter from the server. 2. Run the Uninstall.exe from folder to which you saved the extracted Serial-to-USB adapter driver files. 3. Click OK to continue. 4. After the device driver is removed, restart the server. 3.3 Installing the device driver for Linux Operating System Users: The Serial to USB Adapter uses the pl-2303 chipset. The following instructions were tested on a server running the Red Hat Linux 8.0 operating system. 1. Start a Linux operating system. 2. Open a terminal window. 3. At the command prompt, type the following commands: - To install the device driver, type make inst. (The Makefile command will check the module and compile and link it automatically. It will also remove the loaded Serial to USB device driver.) - To uninstall the device driver, type make uninst. - To uninstall all device drivers (including the base device driver), type make uninst_all. - To remove module (*.o) files, type make clean. 4. Connect the serial connector on the Serial to USB Adapter to the serial port on the uninterruptible power supply. 5. Connect the USB connector on the Serial to USB Adapter to a USB port on the server. 6.
