CATEGORY: ECA ECA 103 - 60 MB FIXED DISK FAILS TO SPIN (09/92) MACHINES AFFECTED - 8550 W/60MB Fixed Disk 8555 W/60MB Fixed Disk 8570 W/60MB Fixed Disk EXPIRATION DATE - 09/30/93 This ECA replaces ECA 080. Some 60MB fixed disk installed in the Personal System/2 Models 8550, 8555 or 8570 may not spin and start up at power-on. Symptoms associated with the failure are: o System displays a memory count o Fixed disk makes a clicking or tapping noise at POST o System displays a 10483 POST error NOTE: If the Fixed Disk has a LED light on the drive, the light will blink approximately 9 times at POST. The light will stay on for approximately one minute, than begin blinking again and a 10483 error will remain displayed. Some 8570 Fixed disks do not have LEDs. The 8570 hardfile external LED (near the power switch) will not blink and should not be used to identify this failure. Replace the fixed disk with FRU P/N 85F0049 for the 8555 or FRU P/N 6128294 for the 8550 and 8570. Only drives meeting this description are affected: 60MB FIXED DISK "MANUFACTURED FOR IBM BY SEAGATE", MODEL ST-177I FIXED DISK DRIVE BACK-UP o If a fixed disk is identified as one requiring replacement, the customer should perform a fixed disk back-up before having the disk replaced. o If an affected fixed disk fails to start at power-on, and the customer's data has not been backed-up, the following procedure may restore temporary operation of the disk. 1. Attempt to start the disk by powering on the system multiple times. If this fails, go to step two. 2. Remove the drive from the system. Place it on a flat surface with a sheet of paper underneath it (the paper is used to prevent scratching of the surface). The drive should be resting on its plastic slide mount rails, in its normal operating position. 3. Keeping the drive against the flat surface, rotate it in a brisk clockwise/counter-clockwise motion. This rotating action should provide sufficient torque to release any bound internal parts. DO NOT hit, bang, drop, or otherwise shock the fixed disk. 4. Install the drive; if POST completes successfully, the customer should back-up the fixed disk immediately.
