HLDS GCR-8482B 48X CD-ROM drive firmware update
for Microsoft Windows 98, Me, NT, 2000, XP

Installation README


This package performs a flash update of the firmware that controls
the 48X CD-ROM drive which might have come preinstalled in your
IBM(R) computer. 

Note:  Firmware is programming that controls low-level hardware
operations internal to the CD-ROM. The firmware is stored on a chip.
Your CD-ROM uses flash ROM's, which can be updated through a program
on a HDD or a diskette so that you do not have to replace the
firmware chip to update the firmware.

Print this file so that you can refer to it during the installation.


Determine which CD-ROM drive is installed in your computer
----------------------------------------------------------
1.  Right-click My Computer.
2.  Click Properties.
3.  Click the Device Manager tab.
4.  Click the + sign to the left of the words "CD-ROM drives".
    If you see "GCR-8482B", proceed to the "Downloading the update"
    section below.


Downloading the update
----------------------
1. Click the file link to download the file from the Web page. 
2. When prompted, select a drive and directory in which to save 
   the downloaded file.


Extracting the update
---------------------
1. Click Start, select Find or Search, then click Files and folders. 
2. Type pz2z31us.exe in the search field, then click Find Now. This 
   will locate the file you just downloaded. 
3. Double-click the pz2z31us.exe icon. 
4. Click Next. Read the license agreement.
5. Click I accept the terms in the license agreement. 
6. Click Next.
7. Ensure that "Save files in folder" is set to
   C:\IBMTOOLS\DRIVERS\PZ2Z31US.
8. Click Next. 
9. Click Finish.


Installing the update
---------------------

For Windows NT, 200, or XP:
1.  Close all open applications.
2.  Click Start, then click Run.
3.  Type C:\IBMTOOLS\DRIVERS\PZ2Z31US\JV3_NT_IBM106.EXE, then click
    OK.
4.  Click Download.
    DO NOT DISTURB YOUR MACHINE DURING THE UPDATE PROCESS.
    a. If you see "NG!" on the screen, click the Information tab.
    b. Ensure that the model of the Current Device is set to
        "GCR-8482B".
    c. If the model is not "GCR-8482B", but you do see "GCR-8482B"
        in the list of Available devices, then select "GCR-8482B"
        from the list of Available devices.
    d. Click the JV3 tab.
    e. Click Download.
5.  You will know that the update process has completed when
    "Download has done successfully!" appears onscreen.
6.  You may now close the Firmware Downloader application.


For Windows 98 or Me:
1.  Close all open applications.
2.  Click Start, then click Run.
3.  Type C:\IBMTOOLS\DRIVERS\PZ2Z31US\JV3_98_IBM106.EXE, then click
    OK.
4.  Click Download.
    DO NOT DISTURB YOUR MACHINE DURING THE UPDATE PROCESS.
    a. If you see "NG!" on the screen, click the Information tab.
    b. Ensure that the model of the Current Device is set to
        "GCR-8482B".
    c. If the model is not "GCR-8482B", but you do see "GCR-8482B"
        in the list of Available devices, then select "GCR-8482B"
        from the list of Available devices.
    d. Click the JV3 tab.
    e. Click Download.
5.  You will know that the update process has completed when
    "Download has done successfully!" appears onscreen.
6.  You may now close the Firmware Downloader application.
