Installation Readme


System Update downloads data updates for ThinkPad and ThinkCentre
software, drivers, and BIOS from a Lenovo server directly over the
Internet without requiring specific user knowledge of where the package 
is located or if it is needed by the target system.

Other ways in which ThinkVantage Technologies help you keep your system 
up to date and secure are:

ThinkVantage System Update will support additional ThinkPad and ThinkCentre models as content is 
created for them. 


Software requirements
=====================
The following operating systems are supported: 

- Microsoft Windows 2000 
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home


Downloading the package
=======================
You will only need to download one of the exe files:

- If a supported Java Runtime Environment is already installed on your
  system, you should download the tvsu-2005-08-01nojre.exe file.

- If a supported Java Runtime Environment is not installed on your system,
  you should download the tvsu-2005-08-01.exe file.

If you are uncertain about the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 
installed on your system, you can find information on how to 
determine if it is installed in the section "Determining if the JRE
is installed on your system" in this document. 

1. Click the file links to download the files from the Web page.
2. When prompted, select a drive and directory in which to save the
   downloaded files.


Installing the package
======================
Uninstall any previous versions of ThinkVantage System Update or
IBM Update Connector that are installed on your system. After you
have uninstalled any previous versions:

1. Go to the folder where you saved the file you downloaded from the 
   System Update Download page. 
2. Double click on the file you downloaded from the System Update 
   Download page (tvsu-2005-08-01nojre.exe or tvsu-2005-08-01.exe).
3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.


Silent installation of System Update
====================================
System Update can be installed in an unattended (silent) mode 
allowing you to launch the installation with the default settings.
If you wish to install System Update in an unattended mode you should 
follow the steps listed below:

1. Open a command prompt (DOS) session.
2. Using DOS commands go to the folder where you saved the file you 
   downloaded from the System Update download page (the file must be 
   either tvsu-2005-08-01nojre.exe or tvsu-2005-08-01.exe).
3. Launch the silent installation by adding the following parameters
   to the downloaded filename -s -a /s /v"/qn". For example, 

   tvsu-2005-08-01nojre.exe -s -a /s /v"/qn" 

   or

   tvsu-2005-08-01.exe -s -a /s /v"/qn"

4. Wait for the installation to finish.
5. Close the command prompt session.


Determining if the JRE is installed on your system
==================================================
1. Select "Run..." from the Windows "Start" menu.
2. At the "Open:" input field enter "cmd.exe" and press OK. A 
   Command Line session will appear. 
3. At the Command prompt type in "java.exe -fullversion" and press 
   the Enter key. If you receive a message like "java full version
   'J2RE 1.4.2 IBM Windows 32 build cn142-20050609'" (the version 
   number might change) then you already have Java installed. On the 
   other hand, if you receive a message saying you entered an unknown 
   command then most likely you don't have Java installed or it is 
   not properly installed.

Note: System Update does not support all available Java Runtime 
      Environments. This version of System Update 
      supports the following versions of the IBM JRE:
 
      * J2RE 1.4.1 IBM Windows 32 build cn1411-20040301a
      * J2RE 1.4.2 IBM Windows 32 build cn142-20050609
